Newbie qustion: is Serviio right for me?

I've looked at things very carefully on the site but you never know until you try something or talk to other users.

I already have two music servers: Squeezebox for internal use only with my Squeezebox hardware and Madsonic for external use. Squeezebox is continually updated even though Logitech dropped it. However, Madsonic is not being updated very much and the search engine is AWFUL.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could tell me if my needs are met by Serviio Pro.

At this time, my media collection is all music files: flac, mp3, and a few other types.

I need the following:

1. A robust search engine for a library of about 500,000 files. These are mainly rips from my CD collection. I can send you a picture of my collection if you don't believe me.
2. I would like to be able to share links and access to my music to friends and social media. Madsonic does this very well.

Thanks for reading and letting me know if Serviio is right for me. I think about installing it on my music server computer but with the two other servers, I worry that I might upset the apple cart.

Re: Newbie qustion: is Serviio right for me?

1. Serviio search seems to work well for strings that match the filename
2. I have no knowledge or interest in this, don't think serviio can/should do it

Re: Newbie qustion: is Serviio right for me?

1. I've never used the search, so can't really say how well it works.
2. With the Pro version of Serviio, you have the web based media browser. What that means is that once you've configured your network router correctly your media is available on the Internet to anyone that knows your home URL and the browser password. That usually means configuring some sort of dynamic DNS for your home, unless your ISP provides you a static IP address (not likely unless you pay for it). How you share that access is up to you, but you certainly wouldn't want to post your access and password on social media. You can't provide a link to a specific media title. All you can pass along is the URL to the Media Browser web portal.

So, is Serviio right for you? Tough to say, but it might not be, depending on your actual requirements. It will serve up your media files well. I suggest installing Serviio and giving it a try. You have 15 days of the Pro features for free to test it out.

This is exactly what i needed to know. I do want to post links to listen to music that I like, not to share the files. Madsonic allows links to listen without a password. I do not want to post the entire web portal.

Thanks. I'll check back in a few years.
