Serviio not recognizing DVD rips as movies

Hi,
I have a movie library composed of several folders (below) and it is managed using MyMovies.
One folder (films) has movie subfolders each containing a movie file (mkv, mp4...) as well as poster image (as a hidden file), sometimes subtitles
One folder (DVDs) has movie subfolders containing the ripped video_ts (with all the vob files) and audio_ts (empty) folders, as well as hidden images.
One folder (BluRays) has sub movie folders containing the movie file (mkv, mp4...) and hidden images.

All these have been selected in Serviio as shared folder containing videos.

All movie folders have a mymovie.xml file, and in the serviio console I did specify that MyMovies is the metadata provider.
Most of the files also have a name.dvdid.xml (not sure where that one came from), but there is no correlation with the presence of that file and the issue described below.

I am accessing Serviio library from a Roku Ultra using the Roku Media player.

PROBLEM: None of the movies in the DVDs folder show up under movies in Serviio, they do show up in the folder view.
Almost all of the movies in the Film folder and the bluerays folder show up under Movies in Serviio, but a couple don't.
All of the movies are accessible and playable via Serviio Folder view.
All of the movies are in MyMovies.

I tried doing a force refresh of the library and a rescan of the metadata, but it still does not pickup all of the movies under Serviio "Movies" folder

So my question, is what influences the fact that some movie folder are recognized as Movies in Serviio and some not?
It cant be the fact the file is not playable, as if I go to the folder view, I can play the file.

The main issue with the above problem, is the fact that when accessing a DVD rip through Serviio "Folder" view, stacking does not seem to work, so it only plays the first vob file, then you have to select the next one manually.

Thank you for any suggestions.

Re: Serviio not recognizing DVD rips as movies

Can you provide an example of a file name that displays in Folder view, but not under Titles? I'm guessing the name isn't being recognized as a playable file, which is required for the Titles presentation. As you noted, under Folders view you can see them regardless.

Re: Serviio not recognizing DVD rips as movies

All the movies in the DVDs folder have the folder / file naming structure (below).

moviename (year)
>AUDIO_TS
>VIDEO_TS
> >VIDEO_TS.BUP
> >VIDEO_TS.IFO
> >VTS_01_0.BUP
> >VTS_01_0.IFO
> >VTS_01_1.VOB
> >VTS_01_2.VOB
> >VTS_01_2.VOB
etc....
>moviename (year).dvdid.xml
>mymovies.xml (hidden)
>folder.jpg (hidden)
>mymovies-back.jpg (hidden)
>mymovies-front.jpg (hidden)

example of movie names:
moulin rouge
chocolat
practical magic
….
None appear in Serviio Movies or Titles folders

Note:
The movies in the FILMS folder (almost all visible) have the same top structure
moviename (year)
>moviename (year).mkv (or.mp4 or .avi)
>moviename (year).dvdid.xml
>mymovies.xml (hidden)
>folder.jpg (hidden)
>mymovies-bac.jpg (hidden)
>mymovies-front.jpg (hidden)

Yet most are visible like
americano, an ideal husband....
but a few are not like
A Merry Friggen Christmas, Gemma Bovery ...

OK, an idea. Roku doesn't support VOB files, so that may be causing Serviio to believe nothing in the folder is playable, hence not appearing in the Titles list. What Roku profile are you using? I'm a little surprised you can play them at all, even from the folders view. Looking at the transcoding support page, I don't see VOB as a container match. Perhaps Zip can offer some insight here. All I can think is that the wildcard statement is catching the H.262 video codec used in DVDs.

In the thread below (where I got the info that stacking may not work in folder view), Zip does not seem to see an issue with playing vob files.

Yes, but that user wasn't using a Roku as the player. Many streaming devices support VOB files, but not Roku. They only support the following containers: MKV, MP4, TS/M2TS and MOV. any other container has to be transcoded, even if the codecs within the container are supported.

Re: Serviio not recognizing DVD rips as movies

Not sure I follow the logic.
The point of Serviio is to transcode formats that are not supported by the player (and vob is not the only one being transcoded for the Roku)
So I don't see why that would influence Serviio recognizing the files as movies.

Re: Serviio not recognizing DVD rips as movies

But to transcode a file, the Serviio profile has to recognize the unsupported container. I can find no reference to VOB as a container that can be matched. So if a player supports VOB (for example, all Blu Ray players), then Serviio feeds it as a playable file. But because Roku doesn't recognize a VOB container, it doesn't appear in the Titles list.

Now, I can't explain why they will actually play from the Folders view. I don't know if Serviio is transcoding them, or if Roku will actually play them "unofficially". Of course it they were supported, they should appear in the Titles listing. So overall, I'm confused. :?

When you play them from the Folder view, does fast forward and rewind work? This would indicate there is no transcoding being done. Now I'm going to have to go home and see if I can rip a DVD to VOB files and see what happens!

By the way, what Roku model are you using? You said Ultra, but is it the 4640 or 4660? Both now support MPEG-2 video, so that might be why they will play. I'm just at a loss over the VOB container. I'm hoping that Zip can offer some explanation that perhaps Serviio is automatically making VOB appear as something else. I just don't know.

Re: Serviio not recognizing DVD rips as movies

OK, so few things
Roku is a 4640X
I removed the DVDs folder from the shared folder, refreshed the library, then added the folder back, then refreshed again.
DVD titles in the DVDs folder still do not show up under Movies or Titles, BUT, Stacking now appears to be working from the Folder view. That is one good news.

Now the Vob Files (from folder view) only play when I use the Chaneru Profile. If I choose the 4K Media player with Mpeg2 or 1080 Media Player (2016+) profiles, it gets stuck on retrieving...
When playing the vob file with the chaneru profile, I can FFW and rewind, AND the file is being transcoded, as I can see the transcoded file being created.

So I am still interested in finding out if the titles could be seen under the Titles / Movies view :)
Let me know whet you find.
Thanks

Re: Serviio not recognizing DVD rips as movies

The Chaneru profile uses a different method of transcoding. Yes, it offers FF/Rewind, but it also reduces the audio to two channel. That's why the Roku profiles don't use that method. Glad stacking is working correctly now. I have the same model Roku, so I'll have to see what I can figure out. Not certain my ripping software supports creating VOB files, so I'll have to play around a bit and see what I can come up with.

Re: Serviio not recognizing DVD rips as movies

Thanks, appreciate you spending the time.
I think playing vobs with 2 channels is better than not at all, so may be you should add that capability in the Roku profiles :)

Cheers
