Does resolution matter on small tv?

Video I am watching is 1080 x 720 and 1500 kbps overall bitrate. Watching it in 16:9 on 32" led tv idk refresh rate and all that even what it means idk.

Am I blind? Or is it because I am watching a lot of cartoons mostly that it looks great to me, and when I see 4k or whatever the new hotness is it looks not that much better?

My vision isn't great and I am not really using it for live sports or video games or things like that, and for my purpose has been awesome. Just wondering if it's like the emperor who wears no clothes, or if everyone else really can see a difference and I am the only one who can't.

Like the fat guy in Mallrats who stares at the magic eye poster the whole movie and never sees the sailboat.

Re: Does resolution matter on small tv?

It’s in the eye of the beholder, but yeah, resolution isn’t as impacting on a small screen.

A 480p video will probably look ok on your 31” screen, but would look horrible on a 65” screen. Conversely, a 4K video looks great on a 65” screen but would not have the same impact on a small screen. It’s all down to the smallest thing your eye can differentiate - as the screen size goes up so does the pixel size for the same resolution.

Re: Does resolution matter on small tv?

Great answer, confirms what I thought.

What do you think about uneven stretch to remove letterbox?

It's either that, or letterbox, or cropping which is dealbreaker for me.

I have been accepting it but on the small tv it's like looking through the keyhole.

    Letterbox
    Uneven stretch
    Cropping sides out

Not a fan. I prefer to see the original aspect ratio wherever possible otherwise everyone is tall and thin (and I'm not ;-)).

I'd even prefer cropping over stretching - I hate it when the aspect ratio is wrong. Some devices allow a mode in the middle, a 14:9 mode where the picture is magnified a bit (evenly) to minimise letterboxing while also minimising cropping, and all the while retaining the original aspect ratio - I'd use that if available.

But I typically watch on large screens - so for me, letterboxing isn't an issue.

Re: Does resolution matter on small tv?

There's a few times stretching might be tolerable, but not for me personally. I too prefer the correct aspect ratio. Yeah, letterbox on a small screen isn't the greatest, but that's what gave us pan and scan, which I hate even worse.

Re: Does resolution matter on small tv?

Only thing worse than pan and scan is the great movies being made into horrible ones by the censors at the fcc. Either they take out cursing or pretty girls because idk some pilgrim kids buckle might fly off his hat. Worse than that though, is when they completely re edit a movie that's over 90 minutes to fit in their time slot and don't tell you. Then you see the movie properly later online or from paid for hard copy and like wtf, darth is Luke's father, they cut that out on channel 69. Those rat bastards! Broadcast tv and the entire media cartel needs to crash and burn and I think it is. News ratings have never been lower and theaters are closing faster than opening in usa. Good riddance to bad rubbish I say. The twentieth century is filled with enough cool movies I haven't seen yet that they could never make another sequel or remake or show turned movie or superhero crapfest again and I would be ok without donating another trillion to the cosbys and weinsteins and pivens and francos and spacys and the rest of those sociopaths who have enjoyed a century of never ending cash, victims, yes men to boost ego, and elite status everywhere. I am telling you guys, John Carpenter, Steven Spielberg, Alfred Hitchcock, Wes Craven, Harold Ramis, even John Hughes, they are never going to make this quality of movie for us again, those days and many of the people themselves are gone. I have to be in the right state of mind, but the older black and white movies with Peter Lorre and Humphrey Bogart, up to the 60s and Steve McQueen and Bruce Lee and Clint Eastwood, pretty much any movie with Paul Newman, you will never get this level again.

I am really getting into a thing here but a lot of people don't like Spike Lee for all these crazy reasons (I have always loved him and Quentin Tarantino and John Singleton and think their critics are out of touch ivory tower sitters), my point is no one is making films like this any more and thats mostly what I watch that and cartoons which who cares how hi res they are.

Only thing I wish I had a decent sized tv for are snowboarding movies. They always look better on a bigger tv.

Depending on the screen size, and the distance you sit from the screen, resolution can make little difference in what you see. For example, sitting at a typical distance from a large screen TV, say 9 feet, the screen size required to see a noticeable improvement from 1080 to 2160 (4K) is about 65". I have a 55" 4K TV, and at a 9' viewing distance it's tough to tell the difference between 1080 and 2160. However, with HDR it's very easy to see the change.

I use a 42" 4K TV as a computer monitor, and sitting 3 feet from the screen the difference in resolution is noticeable. But if I stand back several more feet, it really doesn't look any different than 1080. So in the end, with a "small" TV at normal viewing differences, no the resolution doesn't matter much once you get above 720 or 1080. But with a screen size of 65" or larger, then yes it matters.

Re: Does resolution matter on small tv?

I am less than 6 feet from 32" tv. Just had the first video that didn't look perfect.

Here is ffmpeg output:
  Code:
Input #0, mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2, from 'Wildcats Never Die-456266.mp4':
  Metadata:
    major_brand     : isom
    minor_version   : 512
    compatible_brands: isomiso2avc1mp41
    encoder         : Lavf58.20.100
  Duration: 00:56:03.13, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 2001 kb/s
    Stream #0:0(und): Video: h264 (High) (avc1 / 0x31637661), yuv420p, 1280x716 [SAR 1:1 DAR 320:179], 1867 kb/s, 29.97 fps, 29.97 tbr, 90k tbn, 59.94 tbc (default)
    Metadata:

    Stream #0:1(eng): Audio: aac (LC) (mp4a / 0x6134706D), 44100 Hz, stereo, fltp, 125 kb/s (default)
    Metadata:
      handler_name    : SoundHandler

The top 8th of the screen when the action in the video was going fast showed some screen tearing. Looks great on my laptop and not streaming or transcoding, just playing in vlc with hdmi cable to tv. It wasn't so bad I lost the picture or horizontal hold but it was noticeable and shouldn't be :(

Well, that's a 720 HD video. Depending on the native resolution of your TV, perhaps it doesn't handle 720 as well as 1080 material. Or perhaps the resolution your PC is sending to the TV isn't the TV's native resolution. I've had some hotel TVs that my Roku would connect at 1080, but in reality the TVs were only 720, so downconverting the Roku stream. Unless the TV is really good at conversion (and most inexpensive sets are not), you should make sure you are connected at the native resolution.

Re: Does resolution matter on small tv?

Traveling each day this year (ugh.....) so haven't had much tv access other than hotel tv if they give me hdmi and then the tv is usually 42" they seem bigger.

Otherwise I am watching on my laptop and yeesh some of the ratios do not look good together.

I just got this movie, have been told it's really cool. File is 480p, under 1000kbps overall bitrate so didn't have high hope of it being crystal clear, but the ratio of my laptop screen is 16:10.

Ratio of this movie is 2.40:1 which I have never seen or heard of.

This is what it looks like unmaximized, idk how I am supposed to display it right on this screen I guess letterbox but with the screen is already laptop screen.

Maybe I should get a projector.

Most modern films have the 2.40:1 aspect I guess that is the new hoteness:

Re: Does resolution matter on small tv?

Yeah, now that the world has standardized on a 16x9 screen, they have to switch to an aspect ratio that doesn't fit the screen. They just want us to keep coming to movie theaters. Of course, that's what started movies to all be widescreen in the first place, to differentiate from 4x3 TV screens.

I don't think so. If you are watching on small tv, the resolution doesn't matter.

Re: Does resolution matter on small tv?

Hello everyone,
In short, because to see the best quality image on your TV, the transmitted image resolution should be the same as the native resolution of your TV. And, much of the time it won't be. Also, you will need to be sat fairly close to the TV to be able to appreciate the increased resolution.
Thank you.

Re: Does resolution matter on small tv?

However, the resolution is not the most important ingredient in picture quality. Just because a TV has a higher resolution than another, doesn't always mean it looks better. It might, but not always, and for reasons that have little to do with resolution.
