possible to use plex with serviio?

So i think most of us agree that plex has a great layout. it looks amazing and everything is organized so perfectly. however, the server will NOT stay running more than 15 minutes on my pc before it just decides to close itself. i discovered the serviio server about a week ago and it has not stopped functioning perfectly yet. and its free (i actually paid for plex which is now unusable). the problem with serviio is that it is the most horrible looking abomination i've ever navigated. would it be possible to use my plex app for its visual appeal but have it connect to serviio for dependability?

Re: possible to use plex with serviio?

Can Plex and Serviio exist on the same computer? Absolutely, no problems there. I have it that way on several computers. But the are two completely different applications, with no interaction between them. There's no way to use Serviio within the Plex client, nor to use Plex as a media source for Serviio.

Serviio doesn't have a user interface. However you see it presented is based on the player you are using. With Samsung TVs, the UI is horrendous, but that's not the fault of Serviio. Same when using a Sony BD player. My Roku players have a better UI, but it doesn't come close to Plex. But you have to remember that when you use Plex you are using a player application that was developed specifically for it. Emby has a similar server/client configuration. Both Emby and Plex can operate as a DLNA server, but you'll get the same user interface with them that you get from Serviio. In fact, I'd say the Serviio display is far more customizable, in that you can alter what is available via the Presentations tab on the Serviio console. If you only want a list of titles, you can disable everything else. You can't do that with Plex or Emby.

By default, Serviio has every presentation enabled. That might be why you don't care for what you see. Try making some changes in the presentation configuration and you might find you can make it far more suitable for your use. But you'll never get a user interface like Plex or Emby have with any DLNA server.
