Why people dislike Windows 8.1 so much?

Hello all :)

Linux user here, been using Windows 8.1 X64 lately and everything is smooth.

There are no "forced" updates as in Windows 10

System itself is stable (old rag: dual-core CPU @ 2.4ghz and 3GB of ram, Radeon 7470)

Updates are still received for this Windows version - updated the system numerous times since installing it months ago, never had any problem

You can just "hide" the metro interface by installing OpenShell, which adds a correct start menu

No DX12 support but i don't care so much :)

Light on system resources and runs great on my potato

No intense background (storage) activity as on Windows 10, no background updates etc.

I mean why do people just pass on Windows 8.1?

Well, the user shell was one reason. They don't feel should have to install an alternate UI. Windows 8 also had some performance issues, but I believe 8.1 resolved most of those. In most respects, Windows 7 was just a much better OS than 8.

And Windows 10 is much better than Windows 7. And you can disable auto-updates. However, I do wish they still allowed selecting which updates to install, as now it's all or nothing. Users with more knowledge can probably still find the individual updates on Microsoft's web site and apply them yourself, but frankly I haven't ever had an issue with letting Windows keep itself updated. That way security patches are installed a soon as possible.

Microsoft will begin Windows 8 and 8.1's end of life and support in January 2023. This means it will stop all support and updates to the operating system. Windows 8 and 8.1 already reached the end of Mainstream Support on January 9, 2018. So, you're still getting updates, but only for a couple more years.

Microsoft has always had support cutoff dates for older OS versions. How is that they don't care? Apple doesn't offer support for iOS on devices more than 6 years old. The iPhone 6S is the oldest phone that can upgrade to iOS 14, and it's only 5 years old. Mac computers can only install the latest OS if they're built in 2013 or later.

Windows 8.1 was released in 2013, and Windows 10 in 2015. 10 was a huge improvement over previous versions, so it makes sense to twilight the older ones. But Apple ends support for older OSs far faster than Microsoft. Mac OS 10.12 was released on September 20, 2016, and they discontinued support in October 2019, three whole years.
