Re: I am using XBMC as a comprehensive media center to manag

I would suggest installing Serviio as a stand alone DLNA server, and use XBMC/Kodi only as a player. On my Android based players (Nvidia Shield, Onn 4K Streaming Player) I install Kodi, but do not link to any media folders. I instead enable uPNP in the Expert menu, then add Serviio as a media source. You can also use something like VLC (which will see Serviio without any configuration), however the user interface is terrible compared to Kodi. Depending on your player, transcoding may or may not be needed. My Shield players require no transcoding, while my Roku players need some things transcoded. For some players, it's only the audio that needs transcoding, and in some cases it's only an unsupported container, so transmuxing is all that is required. Serviio can handle it all.
