Linux and Serviio

Ok this is gonna be a long question so here goes.......

Im thinking of using a slave laptop to act as a media server only and was thinking of going down the ubuntu or freeNAS route and decided that i want to be able to download new files to the laptop off the internet easily so ubuntu it is.Plus i saw the setup for freenas and its way to complicated for me to get my head around . My first attempt failed because i dont really know the install procedure for serviio on linux based pcs. I finally got serviio running and showing up on my ps3 and added a few online feeds but nothing showed up and im assuming its because ffmpeg is not bundled with the installation files so was wondering how i go about getting ffmpeg working. If someone can give me a step by step guide to getting serviio working from a fresh install of ubuntu it would be awesome :) Also NTFS drives does ubuntu read them as one of my externals is in NTFS format.

Many Thanks
