Desktop Streaming

Hi:
I´ve done the tutorial on setting serviio to stream the PC desktop. But the results are somewhat aleatory.
I have a Samsung TV UN40C5000. Sometimes It show the PC screen and sometimes it show ¨video codec unsupported¨ (or something like that, is in spanish). I´ve tried to found some regularity but without any luck.
Besides that the stream is very slow. Only when I reduce my PC screen resolution from 1920 x 1080 to 1280 x 720 I have some decent playback rate.
I´m in Windows 7 64 and my pc has 2 Dual core Opterons 870.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Re: Desktop Streaming

If you used the bat provided in the wiki, then your desktop is being captured and converted to a 1280x720 MPEG2 stream at 10000 bps. Since I run my laptop at 1280x720 I have had no problem but 1920x1080 is more than twice as large so perhaps your PC cannot handle the transcoding. You could try reducing the output bit rate to see if that helps, or perhaps raise the VLC process priority. Other than that you will need to reduce your screen resolution. That's probably the sensible option anyway since that's all that is getting streamed.

Please reply with your experience. Which audio capture device are you using, and are you having any problems with it. I am still testing various options so watch the wiki for new info as it becomes available. Any info you have can help make the desktop streaming solution better.

Re: Desktop Streaming

Thanks for you reply.
My first problem actually is about launching the setup. As I said in my first post, it randomly works or displays in my TV screen ¨video codec unaccepted¨
For the audio I´m using Virtual Audio Cable

Re: Desktop Streaming

Its an MPEG2/MP3 stream so the codec will be supported by all tv'S. The error is probably because the stream is not getting to the TV either because it has not been started or due to network errors. Also make sure that only one VLC.exe is running. Sometimes the previous one is not terminated when you quit VLC.

Re: Desktop Streaming

Ok. There are no network errors (I can see other files in the TV) and there´s is only one instance of VLC running.
How can I know if the streaming has started or not?

Watch the VLC timer..it will be counting from some big number or Start MPlayer on the PC as per the Wiki.

If your PC is not fast enough to transcode the desktop in realtime, then it will constantly fall behind (ie: the TV will run out of data because it has not yet been transcoded) so I susect this will be detected as a stream drop and an error message meaning no stream detected. I get this message if I click on the streaming link before starting the stream on the PC. I think it was "Unsupported File Format" when a stream is not present for a link.

Re: Desktop Streaming

Hi!
Now everything is working. What I do is: reduce the PC´s resolution to 1280x720, put the desktop in Windows 7 basic mode and wait until the VLC counter begins to count. Also I reduced the bit rate to 5000. Now the stream goes well.
Thanks a lot for your help!

Re: Desktop Streaming

You might try upping the bitrate to 10000. I found it makes little difference to the cpu load with MPEG2 transcoding, but a huge improvement in the 1280x720 TV picture resolution. With 10000, I can easily read the small type on my PC image. Let me know your results.
