MKV noob question :D

I have a 1080p mkv file and it works great with Serviio.
The thing is i get two black bars when watching on my TV in "original mode". Just wondering if this is caused by the mkv itself and if so, is there a way to reconvert it so i can get full screen without black bars, or, is this a setting in Serviio that i can change ?

try to play the file in VLC to check if the bars are a part of the file or not.

Yup, it seems that they are part of the file.. So can i do something about this ? If there is a way to "reconvert" the file, will i lose quality ?

you will lose some quality. Also not sure why you want to do that because in order to keep aspect ratio it'll display exactly the same or zoom in, in which case you'll lose picture on the sides.

After some research it seems that the problem is aspect ratio, right ?

MKV1 1080p:

1920x816 / DAR 40:17

MKV2 1080p:

1920x1080 / DAR 16:9

Why do they have different resolutions and aspect ratio's ? When DAR is 16:9 no black bars, if DAR is 40:17 i get black bars. Is this a "condition" of the original movie or something with the encoding process ?
Isn't 1920x1080 * 16:9 the FullHD format ?

Some films are shot with very wide-angle lenses and their aspect ratio is higher than 16/9, you can see in the cinema when the curtain open really wide. If you have one of the funky new wide screen TVs you'd not need the bars but they are needed for a normal 16/9 screens.
