What media streaming device (like roku) can I hook to an older television? I'm looking to put a media streaming device on a television in my spare room. It's an older television. Is there a streaming device I can to it? Thanks! Sorry if this is a ridiculous question but I don't know where to look for this information

Many of the media streaming boxes have a composite video output, which will of course work on older, non-digital TVs. My Sony SNP-N200 has it, and I believe as mentioned above the WDTV boxes do as well.

The Roku you mention does have this also, other than the latest Roku 3, which is HDMI only. However, out of the box no Roku supports DLNA streaming, so they cannot connect to Serviio.

That said, there are a couple of ways Roku can stream from a PC. One is to use Plex Server instead of Serviio. It works will, but I don't like the performance of Plex compared to Serviio. I have found that Serviio is much easier to set up and configure, as well as faster performance. I have seen it take close to 30 seconds for a movie to begin streaming, when Serviio will begin playback in just a few seconds.

A second option is a Roku application called Chaneru. It's still a very early beta, but it shows some promise. The big issue with Roku is limited supported video formats. The best fit for it is MP4, while most people seem to use MKV files. If a transcoding profile can be built that works, then it may be what we have been looking for.

Mirabelsee, what does this have to do with his question? Not a slam, I'm just wondering if I missed something... :?:
