400+ Movies not showing in Movies folder

I am having a problem which has been like this since day 1. I have the movies folder active in presentation and not a single movie shows up.

They all show up in folder view, just not in movie view.

Exactly like this thread here:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=21337

My movies are file named multiple ways:

A Quiet Place (2018).mp4
A Quiet Place tt6644200.mp4

There are no meta tags in the files themselves.

So the question is....does there need to be? If so, what fields to make them show up in the movies folder?

I can't get any clear info on the requirement to make the mp4 files show up in the movies folder.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Chris

Re: 400+ Movies not showing in Movies folder

I am assuming that in the Folder view the titles are appearing with accurate metadata. That would indicate there's nothing wrong with your file naming.

When titles don't appear in the Movies or Titles presentation, it usually indicates that the player has told Serviio it can't play those titles, so they are hidden from view. It's possible the profile Serviio selected for that playback device is inaccurate. Do you have more than one player, and are the titles appearing on any of them. Do the titles appear in MediaBrowser under Movies or Titles? If they aren't showing anywhere, then I suspect there's something amiss with your Serviio database. I don't know if there's any solution other than completely uninstalling Serviio, rebooting the computer, and installing Serviio fresh.

With MP4 files, I would have expected any player to work with it, so I'm leaning towards the DB problem. I have close to 4000 titles, and they all appear without a problem. So it's not a quantity issue.

Re: 400+ Movies not showing in Movies folder

They don't show up in mediabrowser either.

This is a brand new install on a Synology NAS that I just bought and it works identically to the i5 laptop that it replaced.....every feature every function.

So I'm wondering if like an MP3 is there supposed to be a field like:

Track
Artist
BPM
Date

Whatever.......that is missing.....as of now, if I load my mp4's into mp3tag which is an MP4 editor, every field is blank.

So I guess there is a question, are those fields or something that needs to be there that serviio reads in order to put it into the Movies for viewing.

This has never worked since day 1 of installing Serviio.......ever........everything else has always worked.

The following is what I use:

Samsung TV 2016 Series 6 4K
Roku Media stick
Mediabrowser on multiple computers

All work flawlessly....except for Movies.....which is why I've been asking and scratching my head about this.

Hopefully my feedback points to something I"m simply doing incorrect?

Thank you.

Re: 400+ Movies not showing in Movies folder

Well, that certainly isn't expected. If they appeared in MediaBrowser, then I would be sticking with my original thought. But if they don't appear in MediaBrowser, something else is at play. To my knowledge, Serviio doesn't read metatags in MP3 files, and of course that has nothing to do with movie files. I don't know if the Serviio log will offer anything of value, but we should probably look at it.

For the example file name you included in the original post, I checked it against themoviedb.com and it appears accurate. I've occasionally encountered movies that the year was different than my file name had, so it wouldn't pull metadata. But it still appeared in the Titles section, just with no DVD cover image nor metadata info. I've never played with a NAS device, so can't say if there's some peculiarity to them that needs to be addressed. I sure can't think of anything.

Re: 400+ Movies not showing in Movies folder

Well what is interesting is that in mediabrowser, when viewing by folder, the meta data pulls in and it shows synopsis, rating etc etc...

It's just the movie folder presentation that is always blank.

So that shows it's not an internet access thing....

Is there a "folder structure" that needs to be followed for it to find it in "movies"?

I want to emphasize again that "movies" has NEVER worked since I found Serviio.....at least this one area of it.

I'm pretty confident this isn't a NAS issue in any way since I've seen this back in 1.10 and still in 2.0.37 (current NAS build).

I typically have had movies turned off......but now i'm really interested in solving this issue......like the thread I referenced in the first post, it was never really solved there either.

Hopefully someone can help me sort this mess out.......... :(

Thanks for trying, hopefully something will pop.

I'm sure it does, just hasn't worked here.

Where did you get the video file from and what does your path look like to it?

Thanks,
Chris

The movie the one that works in Movies is titled “The Green Hell 2017” I’ll get mediainfo later and edit this post, I’m watching something on tv now on my couch. But later.....

Re: 400+ Movies not showing in Movies folder

While I have the Movies section enabled, I almost never use it. With the number of titles I have it takes far too long to load on all my players. I mainly use Titles and Playlists. Do you have Titles enabled, and if so is your media appearing there? I doubt it, since they don't appear in Movies but worth verifying.

As I said, usually when a title doesn't appear it means that Serviio and the player have agreed that they can't play that title, so hide the title. But not appearing in MediaBrowser makes zero sense. All I can think of is something out of whack in the database itself. The fact you have metadata when viewing the titles in folder view shows your file naming is accurate. There are no folder structure conventions that need to be followed. I have folders with no sub-folders, as well as folders with multiple sub-folders, and everything appears as expected under Titles and Movies.

I honestly can't think of anything other than removing Serviio and starting from scratch. I can't think of any other way to ensure the DB is cleaned up.

Re: 400+ Movies not showing in Movies folder

For me this was a metadata problem. I have metadata set to read external *.nfo files and had generated metadata nfo files for my cartoons collection but not tv and movies.

There are a lot of tools to scrape and parse the files I used Kodi some like MovieManager.

Here are some screenshots to see what I mean, it gave the poster for Tombstone to a lot of movies that aren't Tombstone but almost 400 are showing up now, big improvement:

Re: 400+ Movies not showing in Movies folder

Which is more leg work no? You're adding an external dependency that needs to be updated every time you add a movie correct?

In my case I created a new folder share on the system and in the root of the share called it /movies

I recently tried again and put the files in place and suddenly they all showed up in the movies category.

Then when I added media in a totally different folder from movies i.e. music videos circa MTV .....all those started to show up in movies with the actual movies......when I removed the media videos......now I got nothing at all once again in the movies folder on either mediabrowser or the Samsung TV via DLNA. The movies in the movies folder are still there.....you'd think it would still display them.....but it doesn't.

I don't think it makes sense to have to keep uninsalling and reinstalling this to "get it to work" because it isn't smart enough to correct the modifications without messing up the existing/remaining in the console shared library areas.

I was happy to at least see it work once.....but there is something seriously screwed up there.

I reverted back to my old presentation mode of not having the movies category show up.

It is very disappointing to say the least......it would be nice to have @zip comment.

Re: 400+ Movies not showing in Movies folder

Yes mine is an extra step and not perfect I mean I like Tombstone hahaha but a lot of them basically anything the scraper didn't know by naming convention it jut slaps the Tombstone poster on which is fine at least its not a cover from a porno movie or slasher flick or something like that.

I agree something with it is messed up and idk if it is relevant but the version I am using is 1.10 since I have a 1.x license only.

Most of my dlna clients have a search so the only categories I use are last added and folders but maybe in version 2.0 it works, gotta pay if you wanna play haha.

Part of the problem is the scrapers all pull from open source volunteer databases that are not perfect neither is any of the community supported freely developed code. I have seen many errors in tmdb that have never been fixed (mostly anime series). Dragon Ball GT they are missing the last season for example so if you are dependent on Serviio scraping there for your meta tags season 4 will be SOL for you.

None of them are perfect but most are free and made by fans in their spare time. I doubt very seriously that Serviio is zip's bread and butter it seems more like a hobby project we all help out on and the fee just is there to keep it going. DLNA is great but I have no idea how it works or how to write java or any of that so better to have it, flawed as it is.

Some like plex and the others I thought they were not for me or my machines last time I tried. (had memory leaks)

Re: 400+ Movies not showing in Movies folder

And the only movies I have that serviio doesn't show in mediabrowser are codecs that are too new, such as AV1. According to wikipedia:

AV1
aomedia.org
AOMedia Video 1 is an open, royalty-free video coding format designed for video transmissions over the Internet. It was developed as a successor to VP9 by the Alliance for Open Media, a consortium founded in 2015 that includes semiconductor firms, video on demand providers, video content producers, software development companies and web browser vendors.Wikipedia
Developed by:Alliance for Open Media
Initial release:28, 2018
Latest release:1.0.0 Errata 1, (09, 2019)

So for software that was written before this codec was in existence it has no way of playing the movie or knowing what it is. I just got a AV1 movie from vimeo is the only reason I know it was a thing and I re-encoded to x264 and all is good.

Re: 400+ Movies not showing in Movies folder

Yea it's messed up the metadata part. Just looking at my last added I got some Droopy cartoons from vimeo they dont get any tags, Uncut Gems gets correct movie poster, Lupin III gets tagged correctly, and Arthur C Clarke's Mysterious world and The FIFTY get tagged correctly and thumbnails pulled from the video.

For some strange reason Epic Yellowstone which is a miniseries from Smithsonian Channel, gets all the tags right but hte movie poster from Weird Science hahaha wtf?
