Server lost about 10 minutes in, Windows 11

Does not seem to matter how "dense" the media is, was playing an old M*A*S*H episode, and about 10 minutes in, the Sony TV (in my home) froze, and said it could no longer find the server. High date rate, low data rate, suddenly stops.

New build (old computer had been running on old drive for 4+ years, so time to retire), i5-12400 + 16 Gb RAM, Windows 11 pro, fully updated. I fixed the IPv4 address, but using only the MoBo ethernet card. I have a dual port PCIE 8x card coming, just in case.

Hoping I don't have to futz with Linux to get Micro$haft out of my wallet, but...

What did I forget? The log file has recorded all 6400 movies and TV shows being found, so it is quite long. Really not seeing an entry associated with this loss of communications.

Re: Server lost about 10 minutes in, Windows 11

THAT problem was... the keyboard and mouse were still attached, and the sleep mode and inactivity monitor were disabling things. Set that (never sleep, never hibernate, never turn off display), set computer to reboot at 3am every morning (assuming Windows 11 + software is as unstable as previous versions), set power button to force power off, and set BIOS to power up the computer when AC power comes on.

Now I just have to figure out why it does the same thing at 8:30pm precisely. Possibly a Windows update process interrupting things. I hope it is that simple.

Re: Server lost about 10 minutes in, Windows 11

NOT that simple. Finishes a 45 minute series, then a 120 minute movie, then a few minutes into a second series show... connection is lost. Five minutes later, a different Serviio shows up on the Sony TV. Didn't wait until 8:30pm, happened at 8:15pm, give or take.

I set active hours on the server to 6am to 11pm. I have not reviewed all the installed tasks, to see if there is something running, but since time varies...

Re: Server lost about 10 minutes in, Windows 11

Large update to Windows 11 22H2, seems to have fixed it... mostly. The Sony Blu-Ray player has two greyed out entries for Serviio and one orange, and the server has two Ethernet ports (not properly configured for load sharing yet I am sure). I'll try resetting the Blu-Ray player and see if I can make one of the greyed ones go away.

Re: Server lost about 10 minutes in, Windows 11

If your Serviio computer has more than one network adapter, make sure Serviio is using the correct one. Change it from Auto-detect to the specific network adapter you are using for your media player connectivity.

Sony media streamers (their Blu Ray players, media streaming players, or even PlayStations) remember each streaming server they ever see. If you see Serviio in there twice, that means it's seen Serviio with two different IP addresses. You should have a static IP address on the server (or configure your router to reserve an IP address for it so the address never changes). You will have to manually remove the greyed out entries. They stay there forever until you remove them.

Re: Server lost about 10 minutes in, Windows 11

Thanks. How do I tell Serviio to use just the one port?

I had (and have) fixed IP, and on previous server used a 2-port server Ethernet card, and Windows 10 configured the second port as just extra capacity. So I only ever saw the one entry.

Windows 11, randomly just stops Serviio mid-program.

Re: Server lost about 10 minutes in, Windows 11

Serviio cannot use multiple network adapters. It will bind to the first adapter it sees.

If you look at the Serviio console on the Status tab, at the bottom of the page is the network settings. The Default setting is "Automatically detected" in the "Bound IP Address" box. Click the box and you can manually select which network card to use. The selection list will show every detected network adapter, along with the IPv4 address assigned to that adapter. Choose the one you want to use and then click the Save button at the bottom of the page.

I'm not certain what the 404 error means, but the connect time out messages could certainly be tied to Serviio changing the network adapter it binds to.

Re: Server lost about 10 minutes in, Windows 11

After choosing/locking the IP address in Serviio, and going into the adapter Power settings on the network cards and setting them to always stay powered, I have been two days without a fault. I don't know if the last step was required (saw your advice on a similar thread), but done is done.

Thank you.

I actually saw two entries, with two different IP addresses. I have not lost connection, but the Sony player had both connections greyed out (about 5pm, when server reboots at 3am ((I don't trust Windoze to run longer than a day unattended)) ) so I may still have a problem. I'll grab the logs.

Re: Server lost about 10 minutes in, Windows 11

Sony devices save all past media servers viewed. If it sees the same server with different IP addresses, you will see them both indefinitely. You have to manually remove them from the list on your Sony. There's nothing wrong, that's just the way Sony does things with media servers. I've seen that in Blu Ray players and Playstations. Like I said, that doesn't indicate there's any problems or issues. It's just the way Sony devices work, and you have to remove the old entries yourself.

Re: Server lost about 10 minutes in, Windows 11

Both entries were greyed out, is my point. There were two entries, AFTER I had told Serviio to choose the one adapter, and cleared the THREE entries there before, is my point. I heard you before when you said you had to manually delete them, and did that.

Serviio is NOT visible via the one address, but two. AND the entries are still greyed out 14 hours after a server reboot, so there must have been a loss of connection (I think this is a Windows 11 problem, not Serviio per se) sometime shortly before I turned the TV and Blu-Ray player (both Sony) on. The Blu-Ray is not a Playstation, it is latest firmware, and it is set to "instant on" so it does monitor some stuff while ostensibly off.

Thank you for your patience.

Re: Server lost about 10 minutes in, Windows 11

After you remove an entry from the list, everything is greyed out until you select an active DLNA server again. I'm going from memory here, as I haven't used a Sony player in years. But I recall that even my active server was greyed out until I selected it. The Sony will then reconnect and the icon returns to active.

Re: Server lost about 10 minutes in, Windows 11

On Network Connections, they are either grey or white. Options, delete. Repeat for all.
Scan for Network Servers. One shows up. Plays fine until off to bedtime.

Next day, there are two entries when selecting a Media server, and both are greyed out. New behavior, when I dumped my 4 year old computer with Windows 10, and built a mostly new (only the movie drives and PSU are old) Windows 11 package to get me through the next four years (or so).

Serviio's problem... WHY two entries, if I've selected the ONE adapter? (And yes... "Doctor it hurts when I do this." I could remove the second network adapter.)

Windows 11 problem... Why are the connections failed during the daytime?

Sony problem... Why are the servers not autorefreshed if it is sitting in standby mode, sucking juice anyway, realizing the connections are made and lost?

I appreciate what you have supplied. I don't think you can help further, unless you have insight into the Windows 11 bit.
{Begin whine} Sony decided if I wanted a Blu-Ray player newer than 2012 manufacturing date or so, I had to get a Playstation. And one small Blu-Ray remote (Bravia) controls the Blu-Ray, the TV, the sound system, and allows easy access to Serviio. On a control with 1/3 the buttons of the TV remote. {/end whine}

Re: Server lost about 10 minutes in, Windows 11

I don't have any computers with Windows 11, so don't know of any idiosyncrasies with it. That is strange behavior you are getting with the Sony. And I'm assuming the two entries displayed in the Sony are both Serviio, and not one being the Windows Media Server that might also be running?

I'm pretty much at a loss. It's difficult to troubleshoot such things when one isn't on site. Hopefully Serviio is continuing to provide what you need, and the rest falls into the annoyance category. :D

Re: Server lost about 10 minutes in, Windows 11

You have been thorough and helpful.

Both said "Serviio". Micro$haft can hang their media server.

I am this -> <- close to reformulating as Ubuntu, but fear how I would access those disks with other devices (some directories are used by other Windows computers for backup, and Android phones for similar uses), and what I'd have to learn / unlearn to make it work. 34 Tb demands more than one use, as long as you have less than 34 Tb of media to serve...
