I am finding with most of my home video's aren't playing smoothly. They're encoded as mp4, mpg and mkv, the 1080p videos all seem to be juttery. They stop, then start again, stop... start.

It seems to be when there's noise, so quiet bits seem to play okay, then loud bits cause it to... buffer. The video I'm trying to play right now is only 94meg, and 43 seconds long.

The PC isn't the most powerful, is it likely to be a PC problem more than a bandwidth problem? (Dual core, E6500 2.93mhz) I can ping the TV at under 1ms, so network speed looks to be good.

Any help is appreciated.

what device are you using for playback?

Are you transcoding?

Also, is your network connection WIFi or wired? I found that even with 802.11N my WiFi was not fast enough for HD video. Using Cat5 all is well.

Ping response has nothing to do with bandwidth.

Hi, it's a wired connection, even tried changing the cables to be at least Cat5e. I've tried with transcoding and without, both the same result.

It's playing back on a Samsung TV.

It looks like it's down to processor power, as I've installed Serviio on my main PC (at the moment it's on my file server) and it plays HD just fine.

it should work fine on a low CPU too. Make sure you don't have hardsubs on, which would trigger transcoding.

The PC is 3 years old, and was built on a budget then, a 2.93 E6500. It would take a couple of minutes to wake and operating it was almost painful, so I've just ordered an i5 machine to replace it.

My server was originally a dual core AMD with 3 gig of ram. It played pretty well in general, but I do recall a little stuttering with HD video. Then I mucked up the motherboard and put in a quad core with 8 gig of ram. I also bumped my network to gigabit at the same time. Now I can stream mega-HD video. The Dark Knight runs over 50Mbps without a hiccup.

I think your replacement should work well. I have no experience with Samsung, but I've heard pretty good reports about their abilities.

i would try using the abitrate variable to bring the max video bit rate down a bit. Might be that the TV can't handle higher bit rates.

It looks like I need to try this. The new, i5 machine has issues too.

I've lowered the aBitrate to 320 and mxVBitrate to 9000 within the profile I use, but it's still jerky

Is there a pre-set profile I can try that show limit the bitrate going through to the TV?
