Followed the installation instructions to the letter on Synology DS412+, when I click Action > Run, nothing happens, Serviio is permanently "Stopped".

Any ideas how to fix?

Thanks a lot

Talk about needing a degree to set this thing up. Why do you guys not hire someone who hasn't got an i7 in their cerebral to write a simple manual for the average user? Simple ABC language is required. After about 15 hours I've got it working to a degree! Congratulations me kind of.

You can have this for free: (use only if you have a Synology with an intel processor)

1. Go to your Synology DSM Web Page > Control Panel > User > User Home > Check box "Enable user home service"
2. Install Serviio via Synology DSM Web Page > Package Center > Settings > Package Sources. Add this to the location field: http://packages.pcloadletter.co.uk and a Name such as PCLoadLetter and Save it.
3. Download the bottom Java file from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/ ... 34076.html (You may need to create Oracle Account to do so) and then move (cut and paste) the file into your "public" folder accessed via your Network > Diskstation > public
4. Install Java: Go to Synology DSM Web Page > Package Center > Community > Java SE for Embedded 6
5. Install Serviio: Synology DSM Web Page > Package Center > Community > Serviio > Action > Install
6. Install Serviio on a PC: http://www.serviio.org/download and select to install Console
7. Windows only, navigate to: C:Program Files > Serviio > bin > open ServiioConsole.exe.vmoptions in notepad and paste in: -Dserviio.remoteHost=192.168.1.100 and save and close doc. Read more about this here as its above my head: http://pcloadletter.co.uk/2012/01/25/se ... o-package/

But this got it appearing on my LG TV...

Problem is after all that, I've ended up with exactly the same boring DLNA server visual look and navigation as with the Synology Media Server I had 6 months ago. Surely there must be a different User Interface / Theme or App for this to work on an LG Smart TV that gives it some pop when navigating through your media? Here's to another 15 hours finding that out.

It's up to the DLNA client (your TV). Usually they are not very visually appealing. For that you'd need to run an app on the TV (something like Plex), that is not DLNA.

I'd suggest you try it first on your laptop, the install there is usually straightforward, before taking on a custom Linux install, especially on a NAS.

Tell me zip, what's the difference between the Synology Media Server and Serviio. Reading online I was under the impression Serviio was a super-duper media server that ultimately has a user interface like an XMBC or Plex as you mention. Have I got it wrong and its just the back-end so to speak? I tried Plex but it won't allow Diskstation to hibernate. However everyone pushes Serviio as the best hence why I'm here.

Cheers

Yes, it's just backend, basically. What is has over other servers, potentially, is:
- transcoding + file type support
- online content
- file metadata - this is where you might see DVD covers for your movies, etc - making it at least a bit better looking then the vanilla DLNA
- subtitles

But yeah, DLNA is just a very simple protocol. It could look nice, but it's up to the manufacturers to put some effort in designing the clients and taking advantage of the metadata that servers like Serviio provide.
