Serviio Console Won't Start after JVM update (set EXE4J_JAVA_HOME message)

Am I the only one having this problem? A search of the faqs and this forum did not seem to come up with anything.

For two months Java updates om my new Widows 8.1 have been considerably annoying in having broken both Serviio and other essential Java apps like BubbleUpnp for windows. I can't be too specific about what has gone on. I first noticed it after upgrading to a new W8 computer. There have been a combination of failures (this app, that app, the other app or all apps) after 'JVM' updates (some may have been via AVAST 'update'). 'Failure' means serviio console won't start (there is a serviio message - see below) or bubbleupnp is noticed no longer running (using Chromecast). I cannot be sure whether the problem back then was solved by re-updating or manually reinstalling or updating Java or app reinstall or both.

It's been quite confusing. Java updaters are never sufficiently specific as to what version is being updated from/to and not even specific as to whether it is the 32 bit or 64 bit version being updated at the time. I discovered that Java updates from 6 to 7 were removing version 6 without asking and assumed, for a moment, that Serviio needed 6. I've been specifically more concerned with having to factory reset twice - I've never had to do that until Windows 8!

But now this morning:
1) I've set Java updates never to check (thus not automatic) for quite some time;
2) I have noticed only JRE7 folders in both the 32 and 64 bit Program directories for quite some time,
3) AVAST update feature noted a Java update available,
3) I ran JAVA update, it applied an update;
4) I guess it affected the bit version that Serviio relies on because after reboot Serviio is failed. A message appears (see attached).

1) the message isn't specific (obvious to me) as to where the message is coming from (from Java? Serviio? Windows?).
2) If I try to start Console it is unsuccessful (and the same #1 message appears);
3) serviio service was not started, trying to start it got the #2 attachment Windows error 1067;
4) I tried to reinstall Serviio, early on at "Installing" the #1 REINSTALL JVM message appears.
other: Bubble is OK here, I can't find EXE4J_JAVA_HOME in the serviio 3 setup files that I see

It looks like a Java update bug! I'll go there soon but for the benefit of Serviio users I wonder:

At this stage what do i do????

Found this:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=16623

I'll follow a solution given and be back!

Do users know that you can often get the system message from the graphic?

Image

Put the cursor in the graphic. Click to be sure it has focus. Do cntl-C. Open Notepad and paste ...

---------------------------
Error
---------------------------
No JVM could be found on your system.
Please define EXE4J_JAVA_HOME
to point to an installed 64-bit JDK or JRE or download a JRE from http://www.java.com.

the error message is often there and easily pasted search boxes and include in posts (for searches).

Yes, of course, you have to un-install Java 64 bit and reinstall running a downloaded installer from java.com.

Through it all the serviio service disappeared or became unfunctional. You should expect to have to then reload Serviio.

Of course if you need a non-local account in Seviio service properties 'logon' set that, reboot again.

In Serviio console on the library tab tap 'show status' button. If you do not see real filenames (or otherwise detect files aren't being updated) try to see if just re-inputing the user logon password in the services properties (reboot) fixes it - something there reset on me.

Ummm, disabling java updates is different, maybe more difficult, in J7! I got as far as not seeing any Java entry in my task manager startups. This link may help:

This is also driving me crazy. I keep having to reinstall the older version of Java. Assume this is serviio issue in that it doesn't work with the new version? Can this be fixed plaese? Only "niggle" I have with this fantastic server.

Here is the fix go to computer open go to x86 folder open and find java open folder copy JRE6 folder. Go back to computer and open program files folder and open java folder paste JRE6 folder. Click and open serviio and presto back in business. This will fix the issue in windows 7 64 bit once you have auto updated Java.

Thanks. Will give it a try. But this just seems silly. Surely there can be an automatic fix for this. It is not all techies that are using Serviio.
