If the files were added previously, they will stay there. This only applies to finding new files, and they should not be added if there is the .nomedia file in the directory.
If you think otherwise, post
detailed log of files being added and also post directory listing where the .nomedia file is.

...hmmm, well I did add the dotfile after serviio got started, so that would explain it...but I just renamed the TLD of the branch of the music tree that I want it to ignore [the sub-dir where the .nomedia file resides, I mean] and the log showed the database pretty much immediately starting to add all the stuff in the 'new' dir all over again...
Renamed it again, just to be sure, and the log shows it being scanned and added again...will pressing the 'Force Refresh' button in the console make a difference, or to I really need to re-initialize the database to make it go away?

No, it should ignore any files from being added if the .nomedia file is in the same directory or any of the parent directories.
