Serviio

Hi,
after basic installation of Serviio (1.5.2) in Ubuntu Linux and a few tries to get it sending audio streams to my Icy Box Air* I got a bit lost and hope someone can help me out. I guess it's an easy question, but I'm not experienced with dlna and serviio, yet...

What I want to do:
- Play music (mostly mp3 files) from my Linux/Ubuntu PC (as audio stream) over wlan on an Icy Box* which is connected to the speakers. The PC should completely control the playback, the Icy Box should just receive the audio stream and send it to the connected speakers.

What works (basic tests):
- The Serviio console lists a "Generic DLNA profile" with device name wifi_music for the ip address of my Icy Box, status "green".**
- I have mp3 files in my shared folders library path and I can play that music with Serviio MediaBrowser - though only locally on my Linux PC, not remote on the Icy Box... (where I want the sound)
- If I use an android tablet with the "allcast" app I can use it to connect to the Icy Box and play an mp3-audiostream with good sound. So my basic hardware setup (Icy Box over wlan with speakers, dlna etc.) works nicely.


I just want to be able to do the same audio sending like with android/allcast with my Linux PC and am hoping that Serviio can do that...
...basically I am missing an option or something like that in the Serviio MediaBrowser (or elsewhere) to say: Send the audio stream to your detected device "wifi_music" (instead of playing it locally). I think Serviio can do that, right? Or should I use other tools...?

**: With the "gupnp-universal-cp" scanner on my Ubuntu Linux I can see the "wifi_music_streamer" (the IcyBox) as a playing device (speaker icon) in my local wlan ( type: urn:schemas-upnp-org:device:MediaRenderer:1). It lists 3 general entries for that upnp device - Rendering Control, Connection Manager, AVTransport.

If you need any further informations I can provide more details.

Just a link to some generic tutorial explaining how to play music files remotely on other dlna devices with serviio would already help me much. I did not find something with the details I need...

Let's clarify a couple of things. You have MP3 files on a Linux box running Serviio. You have the file folder listed in the Serviio console as a shared folder on the Library tab. The Audio box is checked on the shared folder line.

Serviio does not offer controlling a remote box for playback. I wasn't familiar with Icy Box, so I did a search. I assume you are referring to the IB-MP401Air (http://www.raidsonic.de/en/products/med ... ectID=9510). From what I can see from the description, this requires a DLNA server that supports iOS/Moc iTunes AirPlay, Android requires an app of some kind, and Windows computers which support support PlayTo from the Media Player.

I don't think Serviio will provide what you're looking for. I'm not familiar with software for Linux, so I can't offer an opinion as to what might work. The Icy Box page mentions Air Buddy, All Cast, BubbleUPnP, ShareOn, UPnPlay, iMediaShare, N7 Player and Air Music under Android, and perhaps one of them has a Linux version as well.

What Serviio will do, and does very sell, is stream media files to DLNA media players that have their own user controls. This includes almost every Blu-Ray player, Xbox, PS 3, and other types of media players.

The combination of Serviio with the 'gupnp-av-cp' tool (GUPnP AV control point) immediately brought the success...

In the control point user interface I just make sure my "Wifi_Music_Streamer" (comes from the Icy Box) is selected in the bottom option list, then above search through my music in the menu following the Serviio entry, select a title... and press the ">Play" button ... sound on!

...probably that would be worth an entry in the FAQ I could imagine...?

One thing to add though...

While the gupnp-av-cp' tool basically works, it is really uncomfortable as I quickly found out - I could not play several songs in a row etc.

As a recommendation:
I found a nice little linux upnp control point with an easy GUI and all the standard features I needed, also working seamlessly together with Serviio - it's called Upplay (a Qt UPnP audio Control Point for Unix/Linux desktops).
