Default Gateway Crashes Constantly When Streaming Video

My default gateway keeps crashing when I use Serviio.
I have no idea how to fix it!
I had this problem a long time ago, but now it's reappeared.
HELP!

Re: Default Gateway Crashes Constantly When Streaming Video

Need more information. What exactly is your default gateway (brand/model), and what exactly is happening to it when Serviio is streaming? Is this when you are using MediaBrowser from outside your network, or is it from an internal player? Is your gateway also your internal network switch, or does another switch handle your internal devices?

I have the all in one router/modem from Comcast/xfinity.

By the way, sorry it took so long to see your response...never got a notification!

Re: Default Gateway Crashes Constantly When Streaming Video

I never access my files via the net. Always via ethernet routing through my netgear wall extenders, or through wifi.
I have Comcast wifi at 400 mb speed, so that should be plenty, right?
Also, it usually happens, of course with larger files. What's the max that Serviio can stream without stuttering, or crashing my gateway?
While I'm at it, I don't find anything useful in the newest 2.0 version.
Unless I'm missing something, it's mostly for things I don't use.
Did you improve it's streaming abilities at all?
IF not, can I got back one version, and have my unlimited pro status again?
I really think you might have considered giving your longtime users a one time update for free.

Re: Default Gateway Crashes Constantly When Streaming Video

I'm not familiar with the Technicolor routers, so have nothing to offer there. If the manual I found online is accurate (very little information actually), it only has two Ethernet ports, although they are Gigabit. I did see complaints online about it, with most users recommending using it in bridge mode and using a separate router. This removes the Technicolor from your internal network completely, and will likely provide at least 4 Ethernet ports.

I would at minimum add a Gigabit network switch to your layout. Connect one port to the Technicolor, then connect all other Ethernet cables to the switch. You can get 4-5 port switches very inexpensively, and even 8 ports aren't that much. This also partially removes the Technicolor from the majority of your network. The separate switch will only route traffic to your Technicolor when it needs to go to/from the Internet. Everything internal to your network will not touch the Technicolor except to request an IP address and for DNS services. All the traffic between your Serviio computer and your player should never touch the Technicolor. But putting the Technicolor in bridge mode and adding an additional router takes everything from your network away from it.

Re: Default Gateway Crashes Constantly When Streaming Video

4 port gigabit routers are a dime a dozen. My old house was set up just as atc said with switch and modem/router combo feeding it and the switch feeding another router for wifi and lan stuff.

Now since I live with less devices and people the person upstairs has one wifi network that comes from modem/router comcast pos, and it connects to my nice router downstairs over wds.

Two routers two ssid's from one ISP.

The takeaway here is to avoid using cable company router for wireless or really anything more than you have to, and everything works better.

PS most of these company routers have firmware logs all turned on and persistently log all traffic in real time. Some even with resolved ip or hostname in the log in real time. Not safe, only set up that way so ISP has something to give to law enforcement when a request of your data is made to deflect blame in fraud/catfish/stalking/swatting/whatever crime scenario.

Re: Default Gateway Crashes Constantly When Streaming Video

i had no idea that the company supplied router modem could be the culprit!
Thanks for all the great info.

One more problem is my system. According to the tech that came out from Comcast, I'm getting slightly 1 gig from the router modem, when he hooked directly into it.
When I disable EVERYTHING on my computer, I get faster speeds.
But I can't isolate what is the speed hog.
Especially with almost all services except those I know I need turned off.

Re: Default Gateway Crashes Constantly When Streaming Video

There are computer apps that can monitor network traffic, and many routers have logging capabilities. Perhaps that might help you track down what's eating your bandwidth.
