Audio Codec Blocking Movie

Hello,

I tried to watch a movie with Serviio server and could not because
of the codec used for audio compression.

Is there something that can be done about this?

Re: Audio Codec Blocking Movie

Need many more details. What sort of player are you using, what profile is Serviio using for your player (can be found in the Serviio console, on the Status tab), and what codec exactly is causing the problem? There's a link in my signature line that shows you how to determine your media file contents.

Re: Audio Codec Blocking Movie

Ok. The problem is multi-channel AAC audio. Roku only supports 2 channel AAC, and converts it to PCM. Only the Roku Ultra (model 4640) contains a decoder that can convert the multi-channel AAC to Dolby Digital. This is from their official support page:

Roku devices do not support AAC pass-through. Instead, Stereo AAC is transcoded to PCM stereo.

Roku TVs and some Roku players decode 5.1 AAC to PCM stereo for headphone, internal speaker, and HDMI/ S/PDIF (optical) output. However, Roku devices that support Dolby Audio decode connected via HDMI or S/PDIF (optical) to an A/V receiver that also supports Dolby Audio, will convert the audio to Dolby Digital 5.1.

That "some Roku players" is really only the Ultra 4640. The Ultra 4660 will not do it.

The Roku profiles contain a matches line for multi-channel AAC, so it should be captured and the audio transcoded to Dolby Digital. Exactly which Roku player are you using? Is it connected directly to a TV, or is there an AVR processing the audio? If so, does the Roku connect to the AVR via HDMI, or is the audio fed back to the AVR via optical or ARC? I may need to see a detailed log showing the attempt to play the movie to ensure which profile line is being used.

Re: Audio Codec Blocking Movie

OK, but which model Roku? I'm assuming you are using the Roku 1080 (2016+) profile, but if you aren't please change your profile and try again.

And if the correct profile still doesn't provide any audio, then we'll need to see a detailed log.

Re: Audio Codec Blocking Movie

Are you saying that I can listen to 6 channel audio movies with the Ultra 4640?

I still get no sound with 2 channel audio show "Welcome Back Kotter"
on the Roku Media Player 1080 (2016 Model).

Re: Audio Codec Blocking Movie

I still need to know specifically which model Roku you are using. Saying 2016 1080 player isn't accurate enough. Also please confirm you are using the profile named "Roku 1080 Media Player (2016+)".

I can't say for certain that an Ultra 4640 will play your audio. Since my Ultra 4640 is connected to an AVR, not directly to a TV, all I can say is the few titles I have with 2 channel AAC play fine. I do have one 5.1 AAC test file, and it too plays fine. So I can't tell why yours isn't playing. Again, a detailed log would help identify exactly what Serviio is doing when you play your files.
