Dolby Vision MP4 file not "seen" by Serviio

So, I'm using Serviio 2.1 pro on Windows 10 and I have these files. They play perfectly on the device I'm streaming to if I copy them to a USB drive and stick it in to it (a TCL 4K TV). They also play fine locally on my computer through the native "Movies and TV" app. However, Serviio does not recognize them whatsoever. It's not that the renderer can't play them, they're not even visible to Serviio as media files, even though they're perfectly valid .mp4s that play locally and on my TV. Regardless of if I change what folders the files are in, rename them, put them in their own folders...nothing. All my other files work fine, it's just these, and the only thing they have in common is Dolby Vision. However, they are streamed fine with the native Windows "Media Streaming" functionality and play back fine on my TV with that. So there's no reason Serviio shouldn't support them. I've losslessly cut 30 seconds of the first file and have uploaded it to Google Drive here so you can test it out for yourself. This test file is also not visible in Serviio.

Re: Dolby Vision MP4 file not "seen" by Serviio

What profile has been assigned to your TV in the Serviio console? Perhaps it's not configured with DV in mind.

I do know that DV titles are problematic to rip correctly and play back with the DV metadata intact. While it's great that you can play it via USB, remember that not all TVs have identical support for USB and DLNA. It's completely possible your TV simply won't play such files via DLNA. And that might explain why they don't appear via Serviio.

You missed the part where it streamed perfectly (via DLNA!) with the native implementation on Windows (the "Media Streaming" function). So the portion of your post I quoted is definitely not possible. I selected the Roku 4K TV profile. However, again, Serviio the server does not recognize the .mp4. It's not that it's simply not shown on DLNA endpoints, the server doesn't pick it up in the first place. You can test this out with the sample file.

Re: Dolby Vision MP4 file not "seen" by Serviio

You're right. I overlooked that. And that surprises me it works because the Windows media server is overall such a poor DLNA server. I wonder if it's doing something that is stripping the DV out of it. Does your TV indicate it's playing DV?

Yes, the Dolby Vision logo pops up when streaming using the Windows DLNA function. The video playback is identical to that if I copy the file to a USB HDD and plug it in to the TV. Again, you can see if it's reproducible with the test file I posted.

I can't test it, as I have no DV compatible display. Perhaps someone else can try it for us.

In theory, you can still test, as the problem is that Serviio won't pick it up, not the DLNA endpoint. If it was working, it should show up on the server, it would just be transcoded.

Re: Dolby Vision MP4 file not "seen" by Serviio

Yep, you're right about that. So I did download it and add it to my test files folder. Sure enough, Serviio doesn't load it. Here's the log entry:
  Code:
Skipping processing metadata for an unsupported file (E:\Test Videos\DV test.mp4). Message: Unknown video codec.

And here's what FFMPEG reports as the video codec:
  Code:
Could not find codec parameters for stream 0 (Video: none (dvhe / 0x65687664), none, 3840x2160, 65739 kb/s): unknown codec

So, there's the problem. It isn't Serviio that can't identify the codec, it's FFMPEG. Even though it's standard H.265 as the base video, adding DV into the mix is altering the codec ID, and FFMPEG hasn't been updated to recognize it. My guess about why Windows Media Server is able to process it is because it doesn't use FFMPEG (and does little to no transcoding, so it's not needed).

So, it's the great people that so all the work for FFMPEG that needs to make the changes. But if Zip sees this message, perhaps he can find some workaround in the meantime.

You're right, re-encoding with DV Profile 4 works fine.

Re: Dolby Vision MP4 file not "seen" by Serviio

Just updating an old thread with a fix.

So if the video file isn't visible , check the serviio log for "Message: Unknown video codec" .

In the folder C:\Program Files\Serviio\lib , rename ffmpeg.exe to old_ffmpeg.exe , then go to https://www.gyan.dev/ffmpeg/builds/ and download the latest release. Copy ffmpeg.exe into C:\Program Files\Serviio\lib and restart the servio service.

Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio kicked straight in.

Re: Dolby Vision MP4 file not "seen" by Serviio

Thanks for that update. I don't have any DV titles myself at the time, so hadn't encountered it. Hopefully the next update to Serviio will include the latest FFMPEG builds. I was concerned that the Windows builds were getting left behind when the previous download site went away.

Re: Dolby Vision MP4 file not "seen" by Serviio

I too noticed/suspected and replaced FFMPEG.EXE as the source of the "missing" DV encoded .MP4 scanning issue.

However, gyan.dev does not provide 32-bit builds for users of 32-bit Windows, but here are 2 sources:

4.3.1 (7/28/20) https://www.filehorse.com/download-ffmpeg-32/

4.3.1 (12/14/20) https://www.notion.so/34dc4ddf501a4b98b ... b752b5c29f

Either one will work, though the second is a more recent build.

Also, restarting the Serviio service isnt necessary - just do a "Force Refresh" of the library after file replacement.

As an aside, because the third party libraries (Java JRE, FFMPEG, etc) that Serviio relies upon are frequently updated (for security and stability reasons among others), Serviio needs to be more frequently updated as well, if for no other reason than to update the libraries (every 3 months, 4 times a year is reasonable), even if Serviio's code doesnt change - a once a year release is utterly inadequate when relying so heavily on third party libraries.

Re: Dolby Vision MP4 file not "seen" by Serviio

Hello,

I have some familiar issue atmos dv .mp4 files not being recognized/index.
But i am using serviio on a qnap.
Is there anything I can do to be able to get them being reconized? If so what steps can i do?

I think i need a newer version of ffmpeg? I can go to serviio on putty in the dir cachedev1_data/qpg/serviio i do see a file there ffmpeg (no extension) but I have no idea how to get a newer version of that

Re: Dolby Vision MP4 file not "seen" by Serviio

Hello,

I still have this issue where serviio cannot see the dolby vision mp4 files. I do use version 2.1 on a qnap.
Is there a way to get a updated ffmpeg so these files will be reconised?
Files work fine if i copy them to a usb drive and then play them directly on the tv. But they don't showup when i use serviio

edit 9-08
I solved it!
downloaded the latest ffmeg i could find from the qnapclub (4.4.0)
renamed the old ffmeg file in the qpg folder
uploaded the new version
changed the permisions to match the old file
stopped serviio on the qnap application
started it
went to the webconsole
refreshed my libary
voila done
