Does Serviio downgrade DSD (DSF) playback of audio?

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone had any experience using Serviio for streaming of DSD audio files. I am finding that when the audio stream reaches my iPhone (using Neutron audio player) connected to a high end portable audio DAC (Chord Mojo), the audio sample seems to be lower than the full DSD file quality, which I can experience normally using MinimServer or Plex. Can someone please confirm what is preventing the full quality bit depth stream or is this a limitation of Serviio and I should look elsewhere or go back to MinimServer?

Any guidance/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Vin.

I guess no one has experienced issues streaming DSD not coming through at a lower sample/bit rate?

Development team - Any advice/guidance on why this may be happening?

Cheers,
Vin.

Well, the development team is one person. :D Perhaps he doesn't have any DSD files. I know I don't, but then I don't use Serviio for music listening anyway.

Just a guess on my part, and I could be completely off base, but perhaps whatever profile is assigned to your player in the Serviio console is causing the file to be transcoded into MP3 or something. Can you check and see what profile is assigned to your phone when it connects?

Ah, sorry, did not realize there is only one person developing this tool :o

Just to provide an update, the file is not being transcoded to MP3 but in a slightly lower sample rate of 352.8Khz per my DAC - it should be receiving at the full DSD rate of the file, which happens if I use something like MinimServer or Twonky. Would love to be able to use Serviio but only if I can stream the DSD files at the full rate.

I am not sure if this is a configurable item but would love to investigate if someone can point me in the right direction. I don't see any config options in the console to make any adjustments or changes for this.

Thanks in advance...

Cheers,
Vin.

Well, hopefully Zip will see this thread and be able to provide an answer. It's possible that DLNA protocol doesn't support the full DSD bitstream, but I honestly have no idea myself.

Thanks Dan. I don't think its a DLNA protocol issue as I would assume I would experience the same issue with other streaming server tools such as MinimServer correct?

I have no problem with DSD128 5.64MHz streaming from Serviio to my Pioneer N50A.

Thanks for sharing. I wonder if it’s something to do with running on the Mac. Again, no easy way for me to see whether there is something misconfigured in the profile as I am not sure what to look for exactly. What I can say, is that my DAC which will play anything up to 256 DSD is not locking into full DSD mode when streaming from Serviio - it will do just fine with many other UPnP streaming apps though.... :?

Cheers,
Vin.

Re: Does Serviio downgrade DSD (DSF) playback of audio?

Just to provide some visuals to my problem. You will notice using the same app to my Auralic streamer, I am seeing a lower sample rate representation streaming via Serviio versus MinimServer. The other thing I am noticing, is that the album artwork is of a lower quality via Serviio compared with other UPnP/DLNA streaming tools.

I am not sure whether these issues can be resolved but if so, I would love to know where I can make any adjustments/changes to remediate.

Thanks in advance for any help/guidance, as this is not obvious to me within the console. Thanks!
