My situation:
I have some video's on my home computer that I want to share with kids on Roku on an external network. The problem I am facing, the Roku DNLA player I guess only searches locally. I have it working on my android phone using ServiiGo. I guess my question is; is there an app like ServiiGo on Roku?
Thank you for any help you can provide.
John

DLNA will not work across the Internet. Even if you opened the correct ports on your router, the very first routing point on the Internet will drop the packets.
You have two options: with a Serviio paid license (Serviio Pro) you get MediaBrowser. This is a web based media player that you can access from any computer in the world via the Internet. But you have to use something with a web browser that supports HTML5 video playback, such as a computer, tablet or phone. Some other devices, such as Smart TVs, have web browsers and they may or may not support HTML5 video. It also requires configuring your router to allow access from the outside, and you either need a static public IP address for your router or use some sort of dynamic DNS setup. That's not a discussion for here right now.
Also, if you have Serviio Pro, you can also use an Android app called ServiiGo. It will work from outside your network as well. But it's limited to Android phones and tablets. I don't think it can be installed on a player like the Nvidia Shield.
Your other option is to run a separate media server for that purpose. While I have Serviio Pro, I use Plex to watch my media when I travel. My Roku player that I pack along can connect to my Plex server, once again after the correct ports are open and you configure it on the Plex web site. The advantage there is that using a Roku I can put it on the hotel TV, and not watch on my laptop with its much smaller screen. Plex has apps for most types of players, so depending on what you were trying to use to watch from your kids place, that might be the best solution.
If I don't need the large screen, I still use Serviio as much as possible, and for home use I never use Plex. Serviio and Plex can run on the same computer without a problem.

Thank you for your reply. Yeah, you confirmed what I was thinking. I will see what Plex can do for me.
