Latest NEW Version

Given the Mac OS that I'm still running that is at this point... well... ancient (see my sig), I have to ask at this point with full knowledge that my current host system is so far out of date it can no longer be updated, like, AT ALL, and many softwares such as browsers can no longer be updated due to current online security requirements and hardware incompatibilities in desktops this old...
well, some questions:
Will it still function on this old system?
If not, and/or (or should I say "XOR"
) nobody can really say for certain:
Is there a simple (preferred), or complex (if absolutely necessary) way to back up the 2.3 version I am running now in case the upgrade doesn't work out?
