WDTV Live (1.06.15) - Serviio - .srt subtitles

Hi all
Using Serviio for a while now and I love it.
Just one thing that I just cannot seem to get to work on my wdtv live: .srt subtitles.
I know it supports them (using hd or other streaming methods give no problems) but serviio just won't let me use it.
Using every known profile known to man, no success.
(this is for .avi and .mkv files the same)
In attach you'll find my attempts at creating logs ( I didn't know if I had to let the video play to its fullest, I also tried adjusting things my own way. Also didn't know what to include so just put in everything)
Tried to fix the subs with that wiz thing, nothing. Then I thought I'd try to add subtitles to the file itself (using mkvtoolnix) and by golly that works just fine. Problem is I don't really feel like rebuilding about 500 files of video for this, as I know there must be a solution here somewhere.
Anyway, hope anyone can help. Will be here to provide more info in needed.

It's possible it's not working with mkv files... Serviio advertises the srt file but the TV never asks for it.

Thanks for the reply.
Yet, I have the same problem with .avi files.
And are you saying that Serviio doesn't support .srt with .mkv ?

Serviio supports is with everything, but some renderers (eg Panasonic) don't - they don't download the srt file when playing mkv. Not sure what the issue is here.
Can you try with Twonky?

Tried with Twonky. The .srt subs are coming out fine with both avi and mkv files.
Yet, the media server isn't as user friendly and fast as Serviio.

Can you capture traffic when browsing to the file and playing it (for a few seconds) via Twonky in Wireshark?

I've installed Serviio on a diferent computer, different LAN. And same problem: it is not sending SRTs to the WDTV Live. Accessing the same files directly from the WDTV Live (network share instead of DLNA) works fine with SRTs.

the file are deffinately sent by serviio, but sadly for DLNA the device refuses them. twonky have i guess got a workaround for this but until someone does the packet capture ZIp is requesting there is nothing more we can do.

Hi,
I'm using Serviio 0.6.2 and WDTV Live Firmware 1.06.15.
SRT files are actually being sent and displayed by the device when playing AVI files. My best guess is that you have to make sure you check the "Retrieve descriptive metadata" option when adding a Video folder to the library for subtitles to work properly. Does this makes sense?
On the other hand, SRT subtitles are not being displayed when playing MKV files. The workaround for this is to embed subtitles directly into the MKV package. Embeded MKV subtitles work just fine on WDTV Live.
Hope this helps.

Yeah, I have a Live Plus and .srt subs have never worked with Serviio, for either AVI or MKV files. They've worked with others servers, like tvmobili. Even with this limitation, Serviio rocks the others.
EDIT: My mistake: subs don't always work with the others, either.

Check the .srt file :
http://wiki.serviio.org/doku.php?id=srtwizor
Google : "SRT online checker" or "SRT online repair"

Hi there,
I have installed Serviio on my Mac Mini, we have a wifi network, with a Mac Mini, Some Samsung Tablets and Galaxy SII, also a LG Bluray Home Teather and a WD Live TV Hub where we store all our movies, music and pictures.
We want to use serviio to stream movies from our WD Live TV Hub to a Samsung Galaxy TAB with RockPlayer Lite and play with subtitles, we have configured Serviio Server in a Mac Mini, and in Render Profile we can see the WD Live TV, with General DLNA profile. We also add some local Mac Mini folder where we have some media.
We also are using in our Tablet and phone Skifta, but when we select Serviio from Source, we only can see Mac Mini local folders, how we can access to WD Live media files and also play with subtitles (set) ?
Thanks to all
Serviio ROCKS!

I believe the easier solution for you is to turn on the WD live TV HUB dlna media server in the options and should be available through skifta. You don“t need to use serviio to stream from the live since it has its own built in server. I do not know if its better than serviio but should be a good solution.
If you really really want to user serviio you should be adding the shared folders under your serviio library from the WD live tv hub, they should be visible if the live is sharing them. Just seeing the devices in the list means you can play TO them not FROM them.
Back on topic, just installed the serviio addin 0.6.2 on my whs 2011 and the srt subtitles only work for divx/xvid movies. When playing mp4 or mkv with external srt they are not showing. This is using the WDTV Live profile. By the way why are people using serviio with the live anyways? It reads files directly through smb shares so a dlna media server is not needed! I believe mac and ubuntu have smb sharing so no excuses there. I really don't see any benefit of not using smb, no transcoding no resources used on your pc and you get all subtitles formats (SRT, ASS, SSA, SUB, SMI) and all video formats without sacrificing anything, like a 3 audio channel mkv for instance.

When I stream straight to the WDTV I get lag and stuttering that makes some of my files unwatchable. When I use Serviio I get no stuttering, but no subtitles is a dealbreaker.
Anyone know if a solution for this has come about?

I just tried changing the profile of my WDTV live to "Panasonic Viera (2010)". It displays the subtitles

Not sure if it is going to cause different problems down the track though.
--------
Works well, but this profile will not play MP4 files

--------
"LaCie LaCinema Media Player" seems to display subtitles for AVI files and play MP4 files.

add support for Ffdshow & vobsub transcoding, and boom all those problems would be solved. no more need to actually send srt commands....
Why do new stuff if old aint broken?
