ffmpeg crashing and maybe opening phantom window

Hello,

I just installed Windows on a new computer and set everything up from scratch. I installed Serviio 0.6.1 and the latest DirectX. My library consists entirely of MKV files. I am having a problem I didn't experience on my last system where occasionally I get a window saying ffmpeg.exe has stopped working (screenshot attached). Also, I don't know if this is related, but every few minutes my current window loses focus but I can't see anything pop-up. If I hit Alt-Space, M (to move a window around), and then use the arrow keys, I can see my mouse pointer move as it moves around an invisible window that stole the focus. When this happens I don't see anything new show up in Task Manager. The only reason I'm starting my search with Serviio is because I can't think of what else would even be accessing ffmpeg, and I'm guessing the problems might be related. This happens all the time, even when I'm not currently streaming anything, so it doesn't seem to be related to processing a transcode job. I have tried quitting the Serviio service and I went a good while without getting the invisible pop-up.

What logs could I provide to help diagnose this issue?

Thank you.

Edit: I have confirmed that the phantom window is due to the same problem. When I hit Alt-Space, if I choose Minimize instead, it adds an icon to the taskbar, and then I can pull that up and see that's it the window saying ffmpeg has stopped working and Windows is searching for a solution.

Thanks! I did this a few days ago and haven't seen the problem since. I see there's a sticky about how to do this on the front page but no mention of why you might need to...maybe an update to the subject to say "If you have problems with ffmpeg, do this..." would be a good idea.

Thanks again for the quick help.

Re: ffmpeg crashing and maybe opening phantom window

Unfortunately, I am now experiencing this issue again even with the latest ffmpeg build (dated 3/7). It seems to happen predictably about every 5 minutes, and can be seen in Event Viewer under Windows Logs -> Application. Every instance produces an Error event plus two Info events, which appear identical. Any ideas as to next steps to diagnose this?

Here is a sample Error event:

  Code:
Faulting application name: ffmpeg.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4f56f0a5
Faulting module name: ffmpeg.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4f56f0a5
Exception code: 0xc0000005

Faulting module path: C:\Program Files\Serviio\lib\ffmpeg.exe
Report Id: 700b2834-7181-11e1-8f48-002522ffee12

And the corresponding Info event:

Re: ffmpeg crashing and maybe opening phantom window

you might have to ask on FFMpeg mailing list or on the forum of the guys who make the Windows builds.
