Connection Problems Debugging Tool

Hi,

I wanted to start a discussion about a tool that could help all the strange connection problems with Serviio. I described some of my problems here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6634

Many of my friends use Serviio and most of them have or had similar problems in the past. The problems appear and disappear without any visible reason. Often they only appear on one OS runnig Serviio on the same laptop, so the router/network shouldn't be the problem -- but who really has a clue what is goint on!

I don't necessarily think that it is Serviio's fault. The Serviio log also doesn't show a hint what is going on. Serviio seems to offer its 'services' but no device previously capable of using those 'services' can see Serviio anymore. ServiiDroid though still sees Serviio and can fully control it. Funnily I had also the other way around: devices could see and connect to Serviio but ServiiDroid couldn't.

My quesion is -- wouldn't it be great to have a tool/app one can install on a different computer (from the one running Serviio) or on a Smartphone that could try to connect to Serviio the way ServiiDroid does. If this is successful it knows that Serviio exists, what IP it has, etc.
Once this is established it could try to connect the way DLNA-devices do. If it cannot connect it could print out a hint about what is preventing it from seeing or connecting to Serviio.

Thanks,
sb

You can try to install Intel UPnP tools (link in my signature) and use either Device Spy or AV Media Controller to see if Serviio is running and its details.

I doubt this won't run on Linux..?

It tried those tools a while back on Windows and it was very user-unfriendly. I was hoping for a tool that prints out some analysis one could paste in the Serviio forum.

Btw...could it be that Serviio connects to the wrong network or something? I installed VMWare recently...maybe it messes with the network setup by adding a new network.

Strangely Serviio 'sees' in its console all my devices like my TV and also shows when they are running (green dot). I guess it is something more difficult...maybe on the DLNA or UPNP level?

It could be, you can always force to use the proper iP address by binding to it in the console.
