Installing serviio on a PC running windows XP but run from 7

Hello,

Great software by the way, I really like it. I am new to it and i Need a bit of help.

Background: I have a laptop running windows 7 32-bit. I first installed serviio on it and it worked finely (today) but then, while downloading some files, I ran out of memory. So I decided that I'll use an external hard drive. The problem is that it IS an external hard drive (USB connection only). So I decided that I am going to connect it to another PC that I have. I have a SONY Vaio PCV-RZ24G which is running windows XP and I connected my Western Digital My Book (1TB (WD10000H1U-00) to it. I am also sharing access to the external hard drive from the Sony Desktop. So from my laptop, I can see the drive and write to it. Both drives are NTFS.

Project: So this is what I am trying to accomplish if it's possible:

I would like to "run" serviio from my laptop (windows 7), while the hard drive remains connected to the PC desktop (windows XP). I am wondering how is this done? I have read about the NAS and all, but I honestly don't even know where to begin. Is there a step-by-step protocol on how to do that?

As a sidenote, I would also like to have my utorrent download to that same drive while operating it from my laptop...(but that may be for a different time & place) . So would someone be kind enough to help please? Thank you.
I am really new to the serviio

Just add the path to the remote drive to the console (Add path..) using the UNC form (not drive) as described here: http://www.serviio.org/component/conten ... e?id=21#q5

Also follow the access rights management described there as well. If the drive is not always on, you should disable automatic checking for new files for the shared path (orange checkbox here: http://wiki.serviio.org/doku.php?id=ser ... _explained)

Thanks Zip. Do I have to install anything on the computer to which the drive is directly attached?

Thanks moltra, but I still don't see my vids.

Can someone explain the whole user log in thing?

Do I have to go to the other PC (windows XP) and create a username that is the same one as the one on the laptop that I am using and I have to place them both in the same workgroup?

Is there anything else to do after that?

For the services.msc What username and password do I use? The one for the other computer or the one for this one?

I 'think' you have to create user with the same name/password on both machines and then run the service with the same user.
