internet connection loss when using serviio

I was a long time tversity user only switching to tversity a few days ago. I love it because it is much less of a system resource hog.

I have a major problem with it though. When I turn on my xbox360 and start streaming to it, I lose internet connectivity to every device in the house. The pc that serviio is on, my laptop, the wifes netbook, my phone, the kids laptop...etc. The stream from my pc to the xbox continues to work perfectly, but nothing can connect to the internet.

I am behind a linksys router that has not gave any trouble before, but the only way to get my internet connectivity back is to stop serviio and power cycle my router.

What is going on here?

I have dug and looked everywhere and came up empty handed for an answer. Something is happening to the dns on my router whenever I use Serviio. I can still access websites by IP, but not by name. Interesting.

Happens every single time.

Have to uninstall for now and go back to tversity... sigh.

Do you mean switching to Serviio?

Have you tried forwarding TCP port 23423 on your router?

Yes, I meant to say switched to serviio.

I have forwarded port 23423 tcp, 1900 udp, and 41952 both. Those ports are open on the pc hosting serviio, windows firewall is disabled.

Is this to enable access to the mediabrowser from outside one's network (i.e. from the internet)?

Serviio DNLA is 23423, Serviio MediaBrowser is 23424

Have you opened both these ports?

I have not opened port 23424. I wouldn't think that would have anything to do with my problem.

When serviio appears to screw up my DNS settings, the stream from the serviio server to the xbox continues on without a hiccup. It is every other item in my house that has an IP address that suddenly can't connect to the internet.

I even plugged a static DNS server address into my router in hopes that would solve the issue, but it didn't.

I am also connected to my work via a VPN, and that connection drops also when I start a serviio media stream.

Regarding the stream that you are playing, is it an online stream or a local file that resides on your home network?

All files are local files of the .mp4 format.

Hmmm. Just as an experiment, try changing the DNS entries on your Serviio box and XBox themselves to use Google DNS addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, rather than the DNS defined on your router.

Also, does your Serviio box also happen to have a torrent client installed on it? What brand of modem does your ISP use?

Try running 'ipconfig /all' on your laptop etc before and after you run Serviio, just to see if something weird is going on with DHCP somewhere.

Look at DNS and mask entries specifically.

Then run 'nslookup www.google.com' as it should tell you the IP address of the DNS server it is using to resolve names with.

These steps should clarify whether the problem is one of DNS traffic not getting in/out or whether settings are being changed.

OK, try turning off encryption on your wireless router settings and see if the same problem occurs.

I don't think accessing port 23423 from the internet would be a good idea... just my $0.02.

Temporarily turning off encryption because it might be saturating the router's CPU not good?

Makes perfect sense to me.

That seems to have worked! Everything maintained connection during the streaming time with no security.

So, I downloaded the latest firmware for this router, re-enabled the encryption, and now it is working even with encryption.

Thanks guys!

Ok, cool. I was just being cautious from a security point of view. Anyways, I'm glad your advice helped. :D
