First I kicked myself for not thinking to check system compatibility before buying (yes I'm one of those people who expects everything to work with mac).
After a lot of searching and gaining an understanding of DLNA, Serviio was recommended as a good answer for macs (although I couldn't find any mention of this on Apple or Sony's site)
It works and I'm thrilled! Thanks to everyone behind Serviio.
