Making Serviio work with ZoneAlarm firewall
Posted: Mon May 21, 2012 1:03 pmI'm running ZoneAlarm Extreme Security firewall with latest updates (ZA).
ZA is like an old article of clothing - you know you should have thrown it out years ago, but its just so comfortable.
Even though I'd added both Serviio Console & Serviio Service as "trusted" applications within ZonerAlarm, I just could not get Serviio to work with any of my DLNA devices.
Testing with Windows firewall and ZA uninstalled demostrated that Serviio was working fine.
As usual, even though I'd turned up ZA logging to max, the ZA logs were useless and gave no hint as to what the problem was.
Using Wireshark to trace the comms between my TV and Serviio I could see that they were happily talking to each other and noticed that ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) was being utilised during the initial hand shaking.
ZA has a firewall setting for ARP that is not turned on by default. Turning this on solved all my ZA/Serviio issues and it is now working just fine.
