Has anyone got a boxee? If so what's it like, how well does work with serviio?

Alternatively what's the BEST media streamer?

I think the best media streamer is the Roku. Their major flaw is no DLNA support, which means no Serviio. There are a couple of programmers working on Roku apps that add DLNA streaming, but they're only partially functional. Roku only supports 3-4 types of video formats, and so far the developer I've been working with hasn't figured out how to build a Serviio profile that transcodes to MP4. The few videos I have in MP4 (I've settled on MKV for all my ripping) stream quite well, but nothing else will play.

My Sony SNP-N200 boxes stream quite well, but the user interface can't touch the Roku. Also, the Sony boxes will stream Dolby TrueHD bitstream audio, so my ripped Blu-rays are 100% HD. The Sony doesn't support DTS Master Audio, and sends it as standard lossy DTS. It will also support multi-channel PCM, so that's another way to get your lossless audio. Problem is Sony has discontinued these boxes, and only offers a Google TV box. I've heard that DLNA in that box is either poor or doesn't even exist.

I know this is an old topic, but I am using Serviio with my Boxee Box (DLNA = UPnP). The transcoding works fine if you're looking to play 10-bit anime. Otherwise, the box (I use Boxee+Hacks) can play pretty much any format by default and also has a "Boxee Media Manager" application to stream those files over your home network.

Hey jaruzek, how did you get the boxee to recognize serviio? I have the serviio console up and it shows the boxee as an unrecognized device with a generic profile selected. The listing also shows a yellow light.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

My unit is Boxee DSM-380 with recently updated firmware.

Since we brought this thread back, I'd like to update something I said earlier. The Roku now has support for DLNA streaming. It is still a work in progress, but using the profile being developed on another thread, I can play any online source and all my SD files. still working on the HD videos.
