Synology DS214play transcoding

I just discovered Serviio, and everything works good with one exception.

When i stream video with DTS by DLNA to my Samsung TV, i receive the audio as DTS even when i'm have activated "Downmix to stereo"

Is the transcoding supposed to work with DLNA or only when using the build in "media-browser" from a browser?

Re: Synology DS214play transcoding

I just saw this text in the transcoding tab "When enabled, transcoding enables you to play media files that would not normally be playable by your device. Transcoding only works with a specific Renderer Profile (not the Generic DLNA profile)."

So does it mean i need a special DLNA profile with transcoding? how do i load such a profile?

Re: Synology DS214play transcoding

Transcoding requirements are based on the player, not what Serviio is running on. So depending on your player, they may already be a profile that works well for your device. You can try any profile, not specifically one named for your player. If you find you can't play something, try a different profile. We can help you with profile selection if you let us know what player(s) you are trying to use.

As to adding new profiles, you can certainly make changes to the existing profiles file. However, it's recommended that any user created profile be stored in a different file, so that any update you apply to Serviio doesn't wipe out your changes. Each update always replaces the profiles file with a new version, which often contains updates or new profiles.

Re: Synology DS214play transcoding

Thank you for the reply. I have tried different profiles, for my players which is all samsung TV's, but none are transconding the DTS audio, so i only have sound on the one TV i have which is supporting DTS.

I like to have a profile transcoding DTS and transcoding the new video codec to something older devices understand, any of the existing profiles able to do that?

Re: Synology DS214play transcoding

another problem i have ran into,

after i have tried transcoding with a couple of different profiles for the same device, the NAS is non responsive, and i need power off and on again.

Anyone have the Serviio working properly on Synology DS214Play?

The Roku TV profile (not the 4K version) decodes DTS with both H.264 and MPEG2 video. For the Roku 4K TV profile, it only captures DTS if the video is H.264/265. I overlooked MPEG2 in that profile, so I'll have to update it. Both profiles are transcoding using AppleHTTP, which the TV should see as MOV, and should be supported. But if you try the Roku TV profile and the videos don't appear, then we'll have to tweak the profile to use MPEGTS instead, which I know for a fact that Samsung supports.

Re: Synology DS214play transcoding

I have tested so far:

Roku Media Player:
- h264 with DTS fails
- hecv with DTS XLL play as apple format after a couple of tries, but it will only play for less than 1 min, and then it will buffer for more than 1 min.

Roku TV (non 4K):
- h264 with DTS works with sound
- HEVC with DTS XLL can not load the tv reports an error

Roku 4K Media Player w/MPEG2
- h264 with DTS no sound
- HEVC with DTS XLL can not load the tv reports an error

Roku 4K Media Player (2016+)
- h264 with DTS no sound
- HEVC with DTS XLL can not load the tv reports an error

Roku 1080 Media Player (2016+)
- h264 with DTS no sound
- HEVC with DTS XLL can not load the tv reports an error

Yamaha BD-A1020/BD-A1010
- h264 with DTS no sound
- HEVC with DTS XLL can no sound

Generic DLNA profile
- h264 with DTS no sound
- HEVC with DTS XLL can no sound

Chaneru
- h264 with DTS works with sound (apple format)
- HEVC with DTS XLL can not load the tv reports an error

Samsung TV / player (M-series)
- h264 with DTS no sound
- HEVC with DTS XLL can no sound

Samsung TV / player (J-series)
- h264 with DTS no sound
- HEVC with DTS XLL can no sound

Samsung TV / player (H-series)
- h264 with DTS no sound
- hecv with DTS XLL play as mpeg/DD format, but it will only play for less than 1 min, and then it will buffer for more than 1 min.

for some profiles as soon as i have tried to play a HEVC file, the CPU load will remain 98% mostly on ffmpg until i stop the server and start it again.

I can test more if you need, but to me it looks like i just need a profile, where no video is touched but all DTS are converted to the apple format?

could such a NO-DTS profile be included in the next release?

Re: Synology DS214play transcoding

OK, since I'm the author of the Roku profiles, I can explain some of those issues. With the "Roku Media Player" profile, it transcodes almost everything with a bitrate limit, as the early Roku players had a bitrate limit of around 16 Mbps. That's a bad profile to try for your use, and it really requires a strong CPU. I'm not knowledgeable enough about Synology products to say how much power it has, but I would guess that this profile works the box too hard.

"Roku TV (non4K)", like all the other Roku profiles, uses the HLS/AppleHTTP protocol for transcoding. My guess is that the HLS protocol isn't working well with the Samsung TV, based on your earlier comment. But I am surprised that the H.265 video wouldn't load, while H.264 would. My guess is your NAS isn't powerful enough to transcode H.265.

The other Roku profiles are giving you no sound because I wrote those profiles with the assumption that the Roku player would be connected to an AVR or soundbar with DTS support. Roku players will bitstream standard DTS over HDMI, so those profiles don't capture that audio codec. That's why I suggested the TV profiles, as they are designed to capture all versions of DTS.

The one Roku profile you didn't list here was the "Roku 4K TV" profile. That one passes H.264 and H.265 video without transcoding, but does capture all audio except standard Dolby Digital. Although as I mentioned I overlooked MPEG2 video, so any of yours with that and DTS will still not give audio. Otherwise, as long as your TV will work with the HLS protocol, that one should work with both. If HLS is causing problems, I can alter the Roku 4K TV profile to use MPEGTS instead, which I know the TV supports.

I'm trying to remember what TV you have. It is a Samsung 4K set, right? Did you try the user-profiles.xml file I posted in the other thread you posted on? Or are you still trying to figure out how to put that file on your NAS? I'll address that in your other post.

Re: Synology DS214play transcoding

Thank you for the answer.

I have a samsung NU8005. (no DTS support)

I gotten a little further this night. I got a Samsung NU profile from a guy which has been using it for a year.

problems:
1) after playing several files with different format ffmpeg will keep having a high cpu load after i ended the movies. a reboot of the Synology box is required to reset the cpu load completely. even after i stop the serviio service the ffmpeg will still use above 80%. (or maybe it only happens when i have tried a video which failed like the one below)
2) HEVC plus DTS XXL does not work, the tv sees them as mkv but it can not load the video it fails with "unexpected error". (this works from my windows10 serviio test server with same tv and profile)

Re: Synology DS214play transcoding

Well, based on that profile you loaded it should be working. I just tried the NU profile I created on my NU7100, and played Star Wars. This is H.264 with DTS Master Audio, and no problem encountered. This profile uses AppleHTTP as the protocol. I then tried an H.265 video, again with DTS XXL, and it too plays on my set.

I can't say what's going on with your set, but the same sort of media is playing fine on my Samsung NU7100. Perhaps a detailed Serviio log would provide some answers.

Re: Synology DS214play transcoding

Thank you for the reply.

The most strange part is that the profile works with the TV when using a windows 10 serviio server, but when i use the Synology serviio server it fails, so something most be different between the 2 serviio serverapplications.

On Synology I have selected ffmpg 2.7.1 with Intel SMD stuff during installation, will it be better to select ffmpg 3?

where do i find the logs?

Re: Synology DS214play transcoding

Master just means you post a lot.

Is the nas doing other stuff that is resource heavy at the same time?

I have never used one but used to have a router that had a usb drive connect and would serve dlna and file shares.

There was so little ram on the router it couldn't handle it and corrupted the files (good times keep backups).

What does ram use look like? Do nas OS' have a pagefile?
