Extending a profile ?

I've downloaded a few videos from youtube, I would like to request a bit of guidance on how to get them to play on my devices.

I have two DLNA devices
* A Sony BDP-S7200 Bluray player purchases in 2014, Using profile Sony BDP-Sx70/SMP-N100 (2010)
* A Sony KDL-32EX723 TV using profile Sony Bravia TV (2011).

Some of the videos I've downloaded from Youtube will show in the media browser and play on the TV, but do not appear in the browser (so will not play) on the Bluray player.

The error that serviio logs is:
  Code:
2020-04-20 06:41:40,281 WARN  [VideoDeliveryEngine] Cannot get media info for transcoded file "Namaste Chillout - Indian Yoga Music.mkv": MPEG2TS video file Namaste Chillout - Indian Yoga Music.mkv does not match any supported DLNA profile

The media, FWIW is this:
  Code:
Input #0, matroska, webm, from 'Namaste Chillout - Indian Yoga Music.mkv':
  Metadata:
    ENCODER         : Lavf58.29.100
  Duration: 01:41:23.02, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 446 kb/s
    Stream #0:0(eng): Video: vp9 (Profile 0), yuv420p(tv, bt709), 1280x720, SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9, 29.86 fps, 29.86 tbr, 1k tbn, 1k tbc (default)
    Metadata:
      DURATION        : 01:41:22.976000000
Stream #0:1: Audio: aac (LC), 44100 Hz, stereo, fltp (default)
    Metadata:
HANDLER_NAME    : ISO Media file produced by Google Inc.
      DURATION        : 01:41:23.024000000

I have other files wich appear to use the same encapsulation/encoding which DO play on both devices, example
  Code:
Input #0, matroska,webm, from '30 Minute Trampoline Workout.mkv':
  Metadata:
    ENCODER         : Lavf58.29.100
  Duration: 00:29:50.84, start: -0.007000, bitrate: 17279 kb/s
    Stream #0:0(eng): Video: vp9 (Profile 0), yuv420p(tv, bt709), 3840x2160, SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9, 29.97 fps, 29.97 tbr, 1k tbn, 1k tbc (default)
    Metadata:
      DURATION        : 00:29:50.823000000
Stream #0:1(eng): Audio: opus, 48000 Hz, stereo, fltp (default)
    Metadata:
      DURATION        : 00:29:50.841000000

^^ This one plays on both TV and Bluray player from serviio

Can anyone help me work out what I need to do ?

Fedora 31 server, ffmpeg 4.2.2.

Re: Extending a profile ?

For your BD player, there's much newer profile you should try: "Sony BDP-Sx100 (2013)". No idea if it will help, but it should be a far better match than the one you're using.

For your TV, there are also newer profiles than the one you're using, although not by a lot. Of course, your TV might not be any older than that profile is designed for. It seems that Sony profile development hasn't advanced much in the last 5-6 years. I don't own a Sony TV, so can't help develop anything more recent. The only Sony device I have is a match to the BDP profile I mentioned above, so I've never worked on any tweaks for it. Besides, that player seems to be on its last legs, as it will play a while then turn itself off. The wife has learned to use my Shield, so I probably won't even replace the BD player. I rip all my discs anyway, so I really don't need a disc player any more.

Comparing the media that plays and the one that doesn't really doesn't show any reason why they both shouldn't play. The only difference I can see is the audio codec, with one being AAC (unplayable) and the other Opus (playable). I can't suggest any other profile to try, as almost all will not transcode VC9 video. I looked online for a manual for the TV, and it appears to be a UK model. The manual I was able to view did not list what media codecs are supported.

Re: Extending a profile ?

HI (atc98092) - I appreciate your reply.

I have switched the bluray player to Sony BDP-Sx100 (2013) and that has fixed the problem ! I wasn't aware there was a newer profile I could use. Many thanks !

The bluray player I have is also showing it's age. It had a sony provided firmware update a while back (1 year +) and it's been a bit flaky since - it'll stop responding to the remote and requires the power removing to get it working again.

It also showed a weird audio playback issue for a film where the audit sounds fine when played on a laptop - I have yet to try it on the Sony TV to see if Serviio is the common element or if it's purely the player.

What's Shield ?

Thanks

Gavin

Re: Extending a profile ?

I am referring to the Nvidia Shield media player. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/shield/ I can play virtually anything I've tried with it. I have the less expensive "tube" version, and use Kodi as my player app.

I've found that Sony is not putting a lot of effort into the DLNA player functionality. Same goes for Samsung. I had older Sony players that would stream both Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio from my Serviio computer. The one I have now will play one but not the other. I contacted Sony but never received any response other than the automated acknowledgment of my message. That's why I've basically given up on BD players for my home streaming needs. If I don't need lossless audio, Roku players are great for me. But for my two 4K sets that have surround sound, they both now have Shield players on them. I even have Atmos in the bedroom, although it's only a 5.1.2 configuration with two speakers pointed at the ceiling for the height channels.

You didn't really explain what your audio playback issue is. But if it's playing fine on a PC, chances are your player is mucking with it.

Ok you've mentioned Kodi, I'm not very familiar with this. Is that basically a device/dongle with an app running on it ?

The audio issue - the speech in a movie when played through the Bluray player - sounds a bit like a muted dalek.

Since I don't have any surround sound setup, I had "downmix to stereo" set as opposed to "keep original". I've just tried to playback the same movie with "keep original" audio on the Sony TV and the playback is perfect. So it's either downmix to stereo is upsetting the BDRom player or (more likely) the BDrom is showing another issue - but oddly only with this piece of content.

Re: Extending a profile ?

Well, that audio issue does sound strange. And I do understand the reference. :D Since the TV is playing the video accurately, it does sound like a BD player issue. And there's really no need to use the "downmix to stereo", as the TV should be able to accept the multichannel and play it in stereo on its own.

Kodi is a software application that is available for Windows, Linux, Android and other applications. It can be used simply as a media player, as I do on my Shields, or it can also act as a media server. Since you're already using Serviio, there's no need to use it in that way. It also offers an interface similar to the old Windows Media Center, and can be used on a PC for HTPC use. It's a bit complicated to set up initially, especially to enable resolution and framerate matching, and many of the necessary settings are hidden in the Expert settings. But once they're configured they seem to hold everything fine. I've only gone back in to see if I had missed something, or seeing if any new settings had been added.

Yep - the movie audio plays fine in VLC and in the sony TV, just gets garbled on the bluray player. Very odd.

I prefer to have consumer devices to play things out, I don't have a HTPC near my screens so I can't really opt for anything like Kodi. I had mistakenly thought Kodi was available on a HDMI dongle a bit like an amazon firestick.

In any case, I'm planning on retiring the Bluray player soon and the TV it's connected to in favour of a much more up to date TV.

Any opinion on Sony's Android Implementation in their latest tellys ?

Re: Extending a profile ?

I've never owned a Sony TV, so I have no opinion about their OS.

Don't think that you need a PC to use Kodi. As I mentioned, it is an app available on the Shield, and it can be simply used as a media player. It can also be installed on the inexpensive Android players available on the Internet for under $50. They might not have all the bells and whistles of an Nvidia Shield, but still make a good player.

Here's what a quick search on Amazon offers: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=android+streaming+box

And many of those boxes will already have Kodi installed, so you just need to configure it to connect to Serviio. The one caution I'll add is that few of these inexpensive boxes have Gigabit Ethernet. So with a wired connection don't expect to be able to stream ripped UHD movies. But most of them support WiFi 802.11ac, which should have enough bandwidth for it.

So do you think it's becoming a better choice to use an android media streaming device over a built in streaming app (like the ones most manufacturers are integrating)

I have a desire to reduce the number of boxes I have under the telly and in various rooms, its nice if you can do what you need without addtional boxes in place.

Re: Extending a profile ?

I wouldn't say it's necessarily a better choice. A lot depends on what you want and need. Many of these Android boxes are lacking some apps that a user might want, such as YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video, and so on. If you are only streaming from a home server, and never need to get Internet sourced material, sometimes the apps within a Smart TV are sufficient for a user. But if you need some additional features, such as lossless audio bitstreaming (you want Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio), then they become much more desired. So it really depends on what you want out of the player.

If you don't have a surround audio system, the TV apps might be completely fine. Myself, I just don't care for what the TVs themselves have to offer. So I've used external players for close to a decade. Blu ray players are a nice option, although not all BD players support playback from DLNA servers, so you have to be careful. LG has some great BD players, but very few of them support DLNA. And also for me, I have a lot of ripped Blu Ray and UHD Blu Ray movies that all have lossless audio, including Atmos or DTS:X, and that requires a higher quality playback device. If it was just my wife, she'd be fine with an inexpensive BD player and TV audio. But she indulges me. :D
