Xbox 360 not playing MP4 video or OGG audio

I have set everything to standard Xbox 360 profile, but MP4 video doesn't play and the same goes for OGG. Just keep getting the ol' "file format may not be supported message" from the Xbox. MKVs and AVIs work perfectly based on the ones I have tried.

I then edited the Xbox 360 profile in profiles.xml:
1. OGG is in the transcode list but its not working.
2. tried adding MP4 to the video transcode list, but its still not working.
3. add the ogg mediaformatprofile to xbox 360 and it still did not work.

So far this works much better than PS3 Media Server (which I also could not get OGG transcode to work but managed to get MP4s to work), but I really need to get OGG transcode to work since thats what all my music is in. As for the MP4s I will convert them (if I can find software that actually works) if all else fails.

any ideas to get these to work???

Re: Xbox 360 not playing MP4 video or OGG audio

Ok, first off I finally found a convert that actually works and converted all the MP4s over to MKVs and they work fine.

[root]/etc/serviio/log/serviio.log : Now for OGG, I purposely cleared the logs to and focused on trying to play OGG files on the Xbox360 but the new log isn't populating. I have tried playing 50 songs (all failed to play) but no logs, even after rebooting my entire server machine. I'm not even getting logs off playing AVIs or MKVs, so now I don't know what is going on, it should have repopulated the log almost immediately.

Now I did find this other log for serviio in [root]/log/serviio.log but I don't see anything too relevant but here it is :

Re: Xbox 360 not playing MP4 video or OGG audio

I know, detailed logging is turned on...the log just isn't populating.
I have restarted the entire server machine, restarted serviio several times...but log remains unpopulated.

However it has populated 2 lines, but that is about a port that has already been taken:
  Code:
2011-11-15 21:31:03,980 DEBUG [ApplicationInstanceManager] Port is already taken. Notifying first instance.
2011-11-15 21:31:03,980 DEBUG [ApplicationInstanceManager] Successfully notified first instance.

Here's what I got from the last time I restarted Serviio (which isn't the serviio log...):
  Code:

After I got these logs, I reinstalled Serviio for the 5th time and even as it scans my library of movies, music and pics (which takes a long time) it still isn't logging.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I am managing Serviio through the windows client to Linux server....which is by far the most awesome idea I have seen for such products. Mentioning this just in case it helps any.

I don't know what is going on...but I do know this isn't the only problem I am having, I also have an issue with additional users...but that's a fight between Ubuntu and myself.

any ideas about why the logs would stop logging everything....?

Re: Xbox 360 not playing MP4 video or OGG audio

Ok, thank you for your patience while I figured out what my server was doing, but I managed to fix some things and got logging back.

From the log it looks like FFMPEG is failing.

I can't provide anything for MP4s since I no longer have any.

Here is the excerpt from the log that shows the only error I get when trying to play OGG files:

  Code:
2011-11-16 23:56:47,011 ERROR [ResourceTransportRequestHandler] Error while processing resource, sending back 500 error. Message: FFmpeg execution failed

Any ideas whats going on? Because if I hook speakers up to my server and play them at the machine itself, there's no issue...

Re: Xbox 360 not playing MP4 video or OGG audio

the log you posted is not detailed log (link in my signature on how to set it up). Once you post that we'll be able to find the ffmpeg command, you will be able to run it manually so that we can see the actual problem.

Re: Xbox 360 not playing OGG audio

Ok, I'm sorry for previous posts, but I truly did have the log4j.xml edited and set to DEBUG. However I did say earlier that I was having log issues. Now, today I reinstalled my entire server system and reconfigured everything to get it back. I did manage to get the log file to display the correct data and such so here is and excerpt of the errors recieved.

serviio.log excerpt:

Re: Xbox 360 not playing MP4 video or OGG audio

I just noticed something interesting while trying to play things on my Logitech Revue (Google TV) and same things happens on the Xbox 360....if I use any of the other features besides searching through the 'folders' (such as 'movies') all my video files are messed up...they have the category folder name as the title of the movie.

Also, on the Logitech revue, it refuses to even list any of my music...it will list folders but not the actual music file...the Logitech Revue can play OGG and MKV without needing any transcoding. And again...movies play fine...can't even get music to list.

Is there a hierarchy limit (folder depth)?

Re: Xbox 360 not playing MP4 video or OGG audio

So what happens when you try to run his:

  Code:
ffmpeg -i "/mnt/Storage/Music/DMX/1999 ...And Then There Was X/04 - Fame.ogg" -y -ab 192k -ac 2 -f mp3 /tmp/Serviio/transcoding-temp-10987-MP3.stf

Re: Xbox 360 not playing MP4 video or OGG audio

--enable-libmp3 is missing from your ffmpeg. we had this before with a ubuntu user but i dont know if it was solved, try installing the latest version of ffmpeg from your file repo or compile it manualy with the source from the download page here at the serviio website.

Re: Xbox 360 not playing MP4 video or OGG audio

Yes, found that package missing....got it installed and now its finally working...don't know how it didn't get installed with all the others...

However, now that problem is fixed...another pops up...now the xbox isn't getting the list of albums when I go into artists...doubt the 2 are connected though...

I can confirm that new versions of ffmpeg for Ubuntu are configured the same way and transcoding to MP3 will not work "out-of-the-box". To enable MP3 transcoding, see:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1117283

Option B is the easiest as the thread mentions and it worked perfectly for me.

Re: Xbox 360 not playing MP4 video or OGG audio

@OP - Incidentally, by converting all your MP4 files to MKV you're losing quality - the Xbox profile will transcode all MKV videos to mpeg2video.
Since your MP4 files are most likely decent quality h264, you want to preserve that as much as possible.
What I suspect was the issue, is that the 360 cannot play surround sound in MP4 - only stereo. It was therefore trying to transcode and not finding libmp3lame. I think there are tools which allow you to strip the audio down to 2 channel without affecting the video stream (so pretty quickly), but you'll need to do this to the files before you add them to the Serviio library.
