Movies play fine on the LAN but not at all on the WAN

Hello Serviio forum,

I have been using Serviio for years and I love it. But I am having trouble getting the media browser to play movie files (mostly .ts) when outside of my LAN on my iPad (using the Internet) but these same movies will play fine locally (inside my LAN), using Firefox locally on my desktop computer (LAN) and I use Safari on my iPad when playing movies using the Internet (WAN). The movies will not play on my iPad using the Internet or by putting my iPad in wifi mode in my LAN. Eather way, WAN or LAN, they won't play on my iPad (Safari) . Should I try a different browser in my iPad when playing movies on the WAN or LAN?

There is a slash mark going through the play arrow located in the center of the video screen when I try to play a movie on my iPad (Safari) using either the WAN (Internet) or the LAN (locally).

My other media files play fine on the WAN or LAN such as images and music.

Best regards,
Roy

UPDATE

They won't play on Firefox either using the iPad.

Re: Movies play fine on the LAN but not at all on the WAN

Many home Internet connections are asynchronous, which means they don't upload as fast as download. I have 50 Mbps down, but only 5 Mbps up. My 5 actually tests out about 4.3, which is normal. Even with 5, I have issues when trying to playback an HD video when quality is set to original. It also depends on the Internet connection you have when away from home. When I travel, many hotels limit each guest's connection speed that make it difficult to stream video.

Pictures and music use far less bandwidth, so that's likely why they work fine. When you are connected to your LAN, you have the same speed in both directions.

Run a speedtest (www.speedtest.net) and see what you have for upload speed.

Re: Movies play fine on the LAN but not at all on the WAN

Hello again Serviio forum,

I never did solve my original problem but I found a workaround. On my iPad I installed Photon (web browser) with Adobe Flash support and now my .ts movies play fine after I set the bandwith to low from Photon. So it looks like I needed flash support on my iPad. Am I right?

All the best,
Roy

PS - I use Verizon's cell phone towers for my Internet access which has a download speed of about 12 mbps download and about 5 mbps upload.

Apple devices do not support Flash. You need an alternate browser.

Re: Movies play fine on the LAN but not at all on the WAN

UPDATE

After upgrading to Serviio 6.0 I can now use the media browser on my Apple devices (Safara or Firefox) without using Adobe Flash but instead HTML 5 does the trick. HTML 5 lets you stream videos such as .mpg or .ts , .avi, etc. without the need for Flash. The older versions of Seviio such as 4.x did not support HTML5 but the latest version does.

So now my problem is solved thanks to the new HTML5 implementation. I no longer need Flash.

I hope this is what you wanted.

UPDATE

I stated the wrong version of Serviio. I meant to say version 1.6, not 6.0.

I apologize for that.
