mkv subtitles problem

hi

i have noticed yesterday problem with subtitles in mkv video files (ffmpeg -i -> Subtitle: hdmv_pgs_subtitle (default))
with disabled option "Enable burned-in subtitles", on my tv i have type x-matroska and file can be watched but no subtitles. if i enable this option i get error "Unsupported...." and video file won't play. and on my tv it is not anymore x-matroska type of that video files but mpeg. this is happening with all mkv files that were ripped with MakeMKV for Linux. idk if this is the problem with makemkv, serviio, tv (Samsung M series). i tried with generic dlna result is the same.

any idea? how to fix this?

thanks for reading

Re: mkv subtitles problem

My gut feeling is it's the Samsung. Their DLNA support is worthless. I gave up on using my TV interface long ago and have used a Roku or Shield instead. Of course, my set is much older than yours, and it's been quite some time since I've tried it. I do recall that I could on occasion get captions, but I can't honestly recall what file it might have been. My rips are all with either MakeMKV or a Blu Ray ripper that kept them in the M2TS container. But that ripper was discontinued after the company was legally threatened over ripping BD, so hasn't been updated for several years.

Re: mkv subtitles problem

maybe the problem is with makemkv. i tried with handbrake to remultiplex (or whatever this stuff is called :) ) and it seems that it can work with that. but it takes too much time with handbrake to remultiplex. and i don't understand nothing in that handbrake. will i loose quality or not? fast remultiplex? furious remultiplex? normal? ...

Re: mkv subtitles problem

Handbrake can be frustrating. As you note, there's no way to just remux the video, i.e. just copy the existing video without alteration. But it's outstanding if you need to recode a video into something different.

There's another program called tsMuxeR (https://www.videohelp.com/software/tsMuxeR) that can remux the file into another MKV file or into a TS file, either way not touching the codecs within. So if there's some issue with the container (that's what the MKV is, a container) it generally clears it up. Since it's just a remux, it's quite fast as well.

Image based subtitles are not supported on many devices. Roku doesn't support them. I'm not certain about Fire TV, but the Nvidia Shield works great with them. I have my doubts that any TV supports PGS, since that's the default subtitle for Blu Ray discs, and unless the TV has a built in BD player there's really no need for them to support it.

Re: mkv subtitles problem

Hi all,

I have some 4k files which have over 40 pgs subtitles in an mkv file container.

Is there a limit on how many of these pgs subtitles are in the mkv, or does Serviio not like pgs subtitles?

If I remux the file with mkvtoolnix without most of the subtitles, the file is indexed successfully and adds to the library.
Thanks.

Serviio has no issue with subtitles, but your player might. For example, my Sony BD player knows how to display PGS titles, but will only do so if they are in a TS container. When they are in an MKV container, they are recognized but won't play. Some players, like TVs or Roku devices, don't support PGS at all.

I've never seen that many different subtitle streams in a container, but when I play an MKV movie on my Shield I can choose from any of what's available.

Re: mkv subtitles problem

Thanks for your response Dan,

It's strange how Serviio won't even add them to the library. I have not tried to use the subtitles.

I just remove most of them, and then the files add OK.
Thanks.

Yeah, strange. Perhaps Zip can offer some advice. Perhaps there is a limit in the DLNA protocol, but I personally have no idea.

Re: mkv subtitles problem

How do I sync subtitles with shows I've downloaded from the website. There is a delay of 15-20 sec. I also checked my internetspeed but it didn't work.

If you have videos you've downloaded, and trying to use another downloaded SRT file for the subs, it's likely the time stamp in the SRT file doesn't match the video. I think I've seen programs available that can take an SRT file and alter the time stamps by a defined amount, but I can't recall where I've seen it. You'd just have to web search for it.

If the subtitles are embedded in the video, I don't believe there's any way to adjust them, but again I can't say for certainty.
