Can't see media on Samsung Smart TV

Was using Serviio ok with my ASUS laptop but had issues running movies so invested in an ASUS desktop for the extra grunt. Just installed the latest Serviio and made sure I had version 6 of Java as I've read on the forums that it wasn't working with Java 7. Have set up my library with the different folders and triple checked the destinations but whenever I look in the folders on the TV there is no media. Status tab in Serviio shows a green light for my TV. Streaming the media from a WD ext hdd through powerline adapters. Had no issues streaming through them before. Can see the media in windows explorer. They have VLC icons. My TV is a Samsung Smart TV. Help? :?

Edit: 4 of the 6 folders I have set up I can't see media now.

Re: Can't see media on Samsung Smart TV

Sorry I cant help but I have a similar issue. My setup is Java 7 Update 5 64 Bits, Serviio 1.3.1 Evaluation copy with Windows 8. My TV is a Samsung ES6500.

What happens is, my TV is only showing files inside the Windows standard library(like C:\Users\MyUserName\Videos). I've added other folders, but only the folder itself appear, never any files inside them. When I move such files to C:\Users\MyUserName\Videos they would play normally.

I'm starting to think this is a issue with Windows 8 not being 100% compatible with Samsung TVs, because I tried the Samsung DLNA software (AllShare) and the exact same problem presented. I have no anti viruses or firewalls, just a basic wifi router.

If anyone can advice, I'm grateful.

Re: Can't see media on Samsung Smart TV

Check your access rights for the drives and folders you are attempting to share via Serviio.

If a Windows user, the easiest way is to give the user "Everyone" full read and write access to the folder you wish to share, and all subfolders and files. In Win7 (sorry haven't got Win 8, but suspect its largely the same) right click on the folder, select Security tab, Edit, Add and type in "Everyone" without the quotes. Then set the permissions and press OK. Apply to all sub folders and files. Note that this will give everyone on your home network access to these folders.

And now I'm feeling stupid. This worked for me like a charm on both my Windows 8 Blue(beta) and Windows 8 Pro-N. Its kind weird since all my things were all shared, but I guess TV sharing works a little different than I expected(This is my first smartTV).

There's a obvious drawback, all shared files now belong to literally everyone who join my WiFi. I don't mind that much, its a home network anyway, but I wonder what will happen in public networks.

Thank you very much.

I gave a universal fix using the "Everyone" user as this is a catch-all.
ps: The Everyone group does not include anonymous users, so should exclude users from a public network... however, agree with the sentiment - it is not good practice if you are allowing public access to have this open level of access.

You can if you prefer, just target the user that the Serviio service logs in as. For 99% of installations this will be the "System" user - following the instructions in my previous post substituting "System" instead of "Everyone" (in your case you will also need to remove permissions you added for the "Everyone" user otherwise the access rights will overlap).

Re: Can't see media on Samsung Smart TV

Have tried this and unless I've already made an absolute mess from my efforts so far, this is the pop up I get when I simply try moving one file.

Re: Can't see media on Samsung Smart TV

That message shouldn't be an issue, its just saying it couldn't apply the security settings to your $Recycled folder (a hidden folder where Windows stores deleted files for a while).... however, you are getting this message when moving a file (or presumably deleting one?)?

I presume you tried to change the access rights at the drive level rather than at the folder level - shouldn't normally be an issue. If you did, try right clicking on the drive and select the Security tab - what users are listed and what access do they have (click on each user in the top panel and report the highest level access they have as shown in the bottom panel). If you can see your $Recyled folder (you may need to unhide it) do the same on that.

Re: Can't see media on Samsung Smart TV

Yep I am trying to fix it at the drive level. There's 4 users. Everyone, CREATOR OWNER, SYSTEM and WMPNetworkSvc. CO is the only user with a tick beside Special Permissions. Not sure if that makes a difference. And CO is the only user that doesn't have ticks beside all the other attributes.

Re: Can't see media on Samsung Smart TV

Is this message popping up only when moving a file/deleting a file on your G: drive?

No that's the pop up I was getting when I was trying to apply permissions to a folder in my G drive. This image is what I'm getting when I'm trying to move a file to another folder on my G drive.

Re: Can't see media on Samsung Smart TV

The first image above - don't worry about that, it's normal. Its just telling you that you cannot change the access rights on the the $Recycled folder (as it is a special windows folder). Press Continue.

The second image is the problem - its going to be difficult to diagnose this remotely. My guess is you've somehow managed to inadvertently remove some of the previous access rights on the drive.

Two options that I can see to fix this:
  • Manually fix the security. My guess is that you need to add access rights for the Administrators and Users groups to the drive. This http://www.eightforums.com/general-supp ... evice.html shows how to do this; or
  • If there is only a small amount of data on the drive you could start again. Copy all data to another drive, reformat your hard drive and then copy the data back. Formatting the drive should put you back to your starting state - you will then need to add the "Everyone" user again.

Re: Can't see media on Samsung Smart TV

I did some experimenting and found I was able to move a file from the root directory to the folder that I was being denied access to move files to (from folder "_NEW MOVIES") and back again.

I tried to remove some of the users from the folder "_NEW MOVIES" and start again but got this error message.

I'm assuming you mean copy all the data but not the folders they're in?

Yes, to be on the safe side.

The Unknown Account issue: you must have had this drive connected to a different PC at some stage and it has gather the user credentials from there. This isn't Serviio related though, and not something likely to have been caused by what we did earlier?? You need to go to the higher level folder to delete those accounts (as they are inherited from the higher level folder - either G:\MOVIES or G:\.
