Support *nix / mac style remote paths SMB CIFS

When running under windows it is easy to just mount a share for the library with a \\ UNC path however when running under linux it appears only local paths / are supported as anything typed puts a / in front of it.
This can be worked around by mounting a path in advance but that is extra work to create the path and add the mount command to start-up.

It would be nice if the library supported cifs:// and smb:// paths directly as this would reduce setup work, especially for novices.

UNC paths are only required when you are running the console on a different device to the one running serviio, if you are running both on same device then local paths must be used.

I am not, that is the point..

A have a NAS used for nothing but storage... That has a SMB share..

If I use Serviio under windows I can simply add a path such as \\nasname\sharename and boom I am done.

However:

If I use serviio under linux and want to add the same remote share I can not use the linux equivalent paths of cifs://nasname/sharename or smb://nasname/sharename not sure if this is a bug or just not supported since adding such as path ends up with a / in frond of it.

Instead I need to
create a new folder under /mnt/newmountname
then run the cifs command to mount the remote location to /mnt/newmountname (add it to a startup script if I want to to continue to work)
then go back into serviio and add /mnt/newmountname
and it works.

But It would be nice if a more direct approach like under windows was possible.

exactly its a local path so a local path must be used, linux doesnt have such a thing as remote paths they all have to be local/mounted for it to work.

However there are JAVA CIFS libraries out there for your java app to natively mount a CIFS / SMB / Windows share when run on a non windows system...

Also assuming I where to look at this from a Desktop user stand point, on most Linux and Mac desktops you can open the file explorer and just go smb://nasname/sharename and browse the folder without having to first worry about doing any mounting steps, it is all just handled for you.

But you are correct from a linux file system point of view you do have to hard link it.

cant really comment on MAC as i dont use it anymore but from what i remember, it auto mounts the external drive so again local paths can be used.

The Mac will only auto mount it again after a reboot if you add the command to your start up config.

Problem:
Its easier to add remote content to Serviio under windows because a UNC Path can be used directly. (no os level pre setup needed)

Request:
Give Serviio equivalent capability under Mac linux buy supporting CIFS

One possible way to support this:
http://jcifs.samba.org/

Why? It makes Serviio more user friendly to use.

Re: Support Mac style remote paths SMB CIFS

Not really as very few user are using MAC to run serviio, and setting up a mapped drive is so simple under MAC. (see howto below) so what im saying is it would be alot of work for very little gain.

http://osxdaily.com/2010/09/20/map-a-ne ... -on-a-mac/

But end of the day its up to ZIP whats added but i personaly see no real need for this as it only benefits MAC users and alot of other feature request benefit users of all platforms.

please can you also edit your subject to: " Support Mac style remote paths SMB CIFS " as this does NOT apply to Nix users only Mac users, you can do thsi by editing your original post and changign the subject lien in there.
