access content via unc-path

Hi - I have serviio 1.6.1 running on Windows 10. Most of my content is on other computers on the same LAN. I can access the video content via paths like "\\PCX1\shared\video" or "\\FSRV02\content\tv", but these require usernames and passwords. How do I enter this information into serviio? In the serviio console, under "library" and "shared", I can enter the paths to the content, but I can't see where the username and password information can be entered.
Thanks for any help!

Re: access content via unc-path

Hi - I think I found out how to do it. If anyone can confirm, I'd like to hear.

It seems that serviio can't store separate usernames/passwords for accessing content on other machines via unc-paths. Serviio uses the info from the user account under which the serviio Windows service is running - that is, the username/password from that account. This means that the machines you are trying to access need to have this username/password created, to allow access to the content you require.
The easiest for me was to create a "serviio" user (username/password) on the machine running serviio, use this account to run the serviio service, and also create a user (with the same username/password) on the machines with the content.

Luckily I have admin privileges for the content machines, so I was able to create a "serviio" user on them.
What do I do for machines on which I can't create this special user, but have other logon credentials?

Thanks!

Re: access content via unc-path

You are correct in that accessing network content requires Serviio to run under an account other than Local Services (default user account). This account has almost no network access.

The simplest way to solve this is to run Serviio with the same user account you use when you are accessing the network shares from your computer. That way whatever you can access as "yourself" can be accessed by Serviio. No need to create a new account on all of the machines.

Still, if you prefer having a standalone account for Serviio, you have to make sure that user account has network access permissions. Log into your computer using the Serviio account and see what you can access. You may find that you don't need to make any changes to the other systems, depending on their share permissions.

Re: access content via unc-path

Thanks for your reply. Not that I understand 100%. I previously had separate and different logon credentials to the machines which hold the media content. For example, to access "mach01" I used "aaa"/"bbb" and to access "mach02" I used "ccc"/"ddd". As far as I could tell, I could not indicate to serviio that when it accessed "mach01" it should use the specific username/password for that machine; and likewise for "mach02".
So I therefore created a user on mach01 and mach02 which had the same username/password. I also created such a user on the serviio machine, and ran the serviio service under this user.
Was that not actually neccessary?

Re: access content via unc-path

No, it sounds like you did what was necessary. Whatever credentials Serviio uses has the be the same on all network shares. doesn't matter what user name/password is used as long it's the same everywhere.

Don't feel bad if it's tough to understand. Networking computers can get extremely complicated depending on the devices attached. It's easiest if they are all the same, such as all Windows or all Linux, but it can work across operating systems. As long as you can access your media, that's all that matters.

Re: access content via unc-path

Ok, thanks. Only issue I can see then, is if I had other machines like "mach03" and "mach04", for which I have yet other logon credentials. Without admin privileges for these machines, I can't create a user on these machines which matches the "serviio" user... (Only a theoretical issue for me though).

Re: access content via unc-path

If you have those credentials stored under your normal user account, and you use that account to run Serviio, it should use those stored credentials to access the network shares. Sounds like you have no media on those shares at this time, but keep this info in mind if you ever do.
