Serviio across subnets

Can Serviio be installed on a computer in one subnet and stream to a device on another subnet? I searched the forum and knowledge base (sorry if I missed it) but I could not find an answer.

My wireless network and my wired network are on two different subnets. All of my wireless devices have 172.16.1.x IP addresses. All of my wired devices have 192.168.0.x IP addresses.

I just bought a Sony BDP-S590 Blu-Ray player. It's connected wirelessly to my network. I tried to stream video from a Windows 7 computer using Windows Media Player 12. That computer is on the wired subnet.

When I go into the Windows 7 Media streaming options, the Sony does not show up as an available device. I'm sure it's because it's on a different subnet. I can however ping the Sony from my computer. Both subnets are bridged on the same router.

Is there a way to stream across subnets?

Thanks,

Jeff :)

Re: Serviio across subnets

just curious why your wired and wireless are on different subnets..is this the way the router set this up ? how many devices are on this network ?

Subnetting will set boundaries on broadcast domains, but not sure if it is needed with a small home network...

You may simply need to edit your hosts file on the windows 7 machine..

12-15 devices are on the network. This is the way the router is setup. All wireless on one subnet and all wired on another subnet.

How will editing the HOSTS file help?

Unless you can turn on an option in your router to forward multicast packets between the two subnets Serviio, and other DLNA servers, will not work as that is what the standard uses for disscovery.

Re: Serviio across subnets

How do the 10-15 devices get their addresses ? Are there 2 DHCP scopes for the network (wired and wireless) ? If possible, change the scopes so that they are non-overlapping, but in the same subnet... (ex - wireless 192.168.1.2 -> 192.168.1.99 ... wired 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.200) ...

Thanks for the follow up :)

I redid my entire network and put the wireless hosts on the same subnet as my wired hosts. Not what I (security freak) wanted but I did it anyway.

That worked but now I need to figure out the best settings for ESET. I Googled and found some recommendations but I'm not real comfortable with them but I guess the suggestions are OK since we're talking about a desktop and not a laptop that's used on public networks.

Not familiar with ESET ..

Good news about the LAN ...hope you didn't have to statically address half the network (!)
