avconv vs ffmpeg

I have just installed ubuntu 14.04 and they have removed ffmpeg from the repository. It seems the replacement for ffmpeg is a fork called avconv.

So my question is will serviio continue to use ffmpeg or is there plan to support avconv?

Or just compile your own ffmpeg, guide in the wiki.

Re: avconv vs ffmpeg

i know about the split between avconv and ffmpeg. I am just asking if zip intend to support avconv as well. There sure are alternatives such as compiling ffmpeg or installing from alternative ppa. But for a normal user, installing from repo is still the best way. I am just saying if it is not too much of work then why not, right?

And no, i am not changing to fedora. I am sticking to ubuntu LTS cause I don't have time to install a new os every year.

The way I see it, is that problem lies with a decision that Ubuntu have made (i.e. "they have removed ffmpeg from the repository"). Even though Ubuntu have replaced ffmpeg with avconf, avconf is not a "replacement for ffmpeg". It's a fork. It seems easier (to me at least) for both ffmpeg and avconf to be packaged by a distribution, than for software applications to have to support both.

So you already are aware of PPAs. I don't see the problem then - because they are repositories. Though maybe not as secure or as well maintained as official repos.

I can see that the wiki info could possibly be updated to reflect this.

Definitely sticking with ffmpeg - they have faster development cycle and also backport all the avconv code into ffmpeg, which is not the case for avconv.

Re: avconv vs ffmpeg

Here is a possible solution for those using avconv, apparently:

I'm not sure how well this will work though.
