service disconnects and cannot be found - E series Samsung

I seem to have a very similar problem to the one listed here. Although none of these solutions I tried worked for me. viewtopic.php?f=10&t=4337

I have a UA40ES6200 Samsung TV. Serviio is normally found and as I begin playing a file, a few minutes later it cuts out and serviio cannot be found by the TV. I can still play the file though in it's entirety if I go to 'last played' and chose it from there even though Serviio cannot be found. I can use my ipad to find serviio and play anything as per normal, just not through the TV. I previously used Serviio 1.0 and had no issues like this. upgrading to 1.2 and beyond I can't seem to work it out.

Solutions I have tried.
Router giving the PC and TV preferred IP addresses which are still set
changing the router channel to a less used option.
re installing the software.

All to no avail. I have added the log file in the hope a solution can be found to it.

I hope this is enough of the file. I cut some information out to get the file size down. I don't think it was anything that mattered. Looked to be repeating data

Looks like the TV or network is closing the connection. Have you checked:

Re: service disconnects and cannot be found - E series Samsu

My PC is set to never sleep. I need to manually make this happen.

I have taken a screenshot of the profiles. Half of these do not show up on my router, not even sure what some are? I have given the TV a preferred IP but even the old one that was assigned manually is showing up in addition to the preferred. I've also reset Serviio and make sure the preferred IP's start at XXX.XXX.X.100 where if there are assigned randomly they begin at XXX.XXX.X.2 to ensure a random Ip isnt assigned if my preferred device is not ON.

I will try what you have listed and report back

Could this be it? I've found the manual for this but still unsure what it means.

Turn UPnP On ON
Advertisement Period (in minutes) 30
Advertisement Time to Live (in hops) 4

UPnP Portmap Table
Active Protocol Int. Port Ext. Port IP Address

You can clean out all old renderer addresses if you like - Remove all of them and then press Save, press Refresh (and assign the proper profile if not automatically assigned) and then press Save again. Servio retains every IP address it ever sees, hence the list of unknown addresses. Next version will allow you to disable access for any new renderers, which will help.

Re: service disconnects and cannot be found - E series Samsu

Only if UPnP was off previously. It should be on.
If UPnP is working and you also have "Automatically configure your router" enabled in the Remote tab, you should also have the TCP Port 23424 listed against your server address. If you don't have any ports listed it would suggest UPnP isn't working.

Re: service disconnects and cannot be found - E series Samsu

1. - I tried to do the mulitcast fix and it looks like my router Netgear DGND3700v2 does not have this option. I hope it's not the issue then. Surely others here have this same router? EDIT: Found something in the manual, which I have enabled RIP2M (as it's disabled my default)

"RIP Version. This controls the format and the broadcasting method of the RIP packets
that the wireless modem router sends. It recognizes both formats when receiving. By
default, the RIP function is disabled.

- RIP-1 is universally supported. It is adequate for most networks, unless you have an
unusual network setup.
- RIP-2 carries more information. Both RIP-2B and RIP-2M send the routing data in
RIP-2 format. RIP-2B uses subnet broadcasting. RIP-2M uses multicasting."

2. - UPnP was already switched on although I decreased the advertisement time and increase the TTL to cover my bases.
I don't seem to have any ports listed against it. Maybe this is an issue although I have always has UPnP ticked

3. - I haven't been able to test the service dependency option as I went into 'services' and I can't seem to modify that tab.

EDIT: I have no idea how to list TCPPort 23424 against my server address, I also notice NAt is listed as 'secure' not 'open'.

EDIT2: Still not fixed. I have two TV's - TV1 was playing a test file and cut out after a short time then serviio cannot be found. Went to TV2 and it's found ok. Seems to be found the FIRST time you turn it on for a while then disappears?

Re: service disconnects and cannot be found - E series Samsu

I believe I figured out how to add a port forward as you mentioned. I added the 'custom service TCP: 23424' then added my routers IP to it to allow this port through. None of the above attempts at a fix worked so I hope this does.

OK, you have exactly the same router as I do. There is no need to port forward on this router - UPNP should do this for you. As you didn't get port 23424 showing up in your UPNP list and I know this router's UPNP works, it must be your PC that is blocking it.

Try turning off all firewall software (and virus scanning if firewall alone doesn't work) and then in Serviio console remote tab, check the "Automatically configure your router" and press Save and then "Check Connectivity Status". If you get a green tick then all is good. The lack of UPNP is the most likely culprit for your connectivity issues, so I think we need to get that going first.
3. - I haven't been able to test the service dependency option as I went into 'services' and I can't seem to modify that tab.
No you can't modify in that tab - but if the command line worked it should list the dependency.

Also - RIP settings should be left as "both" and "disabled" (they are not relevant here).

It was strange as I have had the same PC when it was working perfectly before. I can see under 'inbound firewall rules' Serviio is set to accept all and port 8895 is listed under TCP.

I am unable to configure the console settings as you suggest, it's all greayed out. Perhaps as I only have free right now? Happy to buy pro if I know it works

I screenshotted the UPNP page under advanced

I turned the firewall off and this showed up under UPNP. that IP is the PC that Serviio is on. It doesn't seem to be the TCP 23424 that it should be

Also I didn't use the command line. I had no idea how or where to apply it, so I steered clear, the instructions didn't seem to make sense to me. Not sure if that's the relevant problem though

Re: service disconnects and cannot be found - E series Samsu

No you probably won't get port 23424 unless on the evaluation or pro version as its Mediabrowser that uses this port (a pro only feature). You can tell your status on the "About Tab" - it will either show Free or Evaluation version. Suspect its on Free :-)

The fact that some other software has now opened a port via UPNP tells me your firewall is blocking these transactions (my list of ports opened under UPNP is over a page long with various software on various PC's opening ports). I'd reset the parameters in the router for UPNP back to their defaults by the way.

With the firewall disabled test to see if your TV's now see Serviio a bit better over the next day. Also, is there a rule for Serviio to accept UDP packets (I have three rules, two for Serviio Service on TCP and UDP, and one for Serviio Console on TCP - I actually have 21 rules, but its seven times the same rules by the look of it. Suspect this is all the versions I have tried so I may pass on to @zip to look into).

Re: service disconnects and cannot be found - E series Samsu

I just bought the pro version just to try to get this sorted. It's that important really.

I get the green tick and the port is now showing up as a TCP connection. I also ticked allow router to get incomming connections.

I still have my standard firewall disabled. now i've allowed connections can I turn it back on? Or if not do you have another solution for this?

Appreciating your help, this has been a long term issue since 1.2 came out.

EDIT: UPnP still has it listed as allowed, firewall is off and it's stopped showing on TV. Also: I have avast free security.

Re: service disconnects and cannot be found - E series Samsu

Is there a way to update those exceptions to allow them through. Or is there a different solution to the ones tried?

EDIT: Could it be the fact I have home sharing and windows media player sharing enabled so there's a conflict. As my TV also recognises Windows Media player as an option. Although when serviio disappears, so does the WMP.

Re: service disconnects and cannot be found - E series Samsu

I'm not sure you had to buy pro to fix this - that port is only for remote access into Mediabrowser. I'm sure you won't regret it though and its always good to support the developer. While that port is only for Mediabrowser, my understanding is UPNP is needed for other parts in Serviio, as is the ability to communicate on both TCP and UDP without being blocked by the firewall.

  • "it's stopped showing on TV" - Not sure I understand - the end game is to have it showing on your TV consistently? has it improved the availability of Serviio on your TV, or is it still the same or worse?
  • Avast - also may have a firewall. Make sure that is disabled for now (running two is never a good idea anyway).
  • "I still have my standard firewall disabled. now i've allowed connections can I turn it back on" No - these connections will time out, but more importantly, its not these connections that are necessarily the problem. We need to determine whether the firewall is inhibiting the communication between Serviio and the TV first.
  • "Is there a way to update those exceptions to allow them through" - I think you should be able to manually create them. You need to allow both TCP (all ports) and UDP (all ports) to ServioService.exe and TCP (all ports) to ServiioConsole.exe (you need to point to the full path). I'm curious - which of these do you have now?
I'd leave the firewall disabled to try and determine whether this helps the situation. In any case establish the firewall rules ready for when we turn it back on. At this stage it may also pay to do a detailed log again to see if it has cleared any of those socket shutdowns - try and capture when the servers are and then are not showing up on the TV.

<edit>Home sharing and WMP Media Server shouldnt be a problem (I have them both as well). "Although when serviio disappears, so does the WMP." Now that is unusual, usually WMP stays up </edit>

1 - It's stopped showing on the TV under source. Serviio normally shows as an option under 'source' when i can use it. The movie will begin playing then when it disconnects suddenly, Serviio does not show as availabe under 'source. I can also go into it via 'samsung all share' button although its the same result. I would like it consistently as it would indicated I can watch a full movie without disconnection, and can watch things any time.

2 - I can only turn all the shields off or on, nothing between. I don't think any of these listed are a firewall. Avast has asked me in the past if I wish to upgrade and include firewall security I'm sure.

3 - Firewall rules - Ive attached the screenshot. They all seem to be allowed through.

4 - I have two TV's connected to serviio and I just played it on TV1 and it cut out then I cannot find serviio in sources now. I can still find it on TV2 though. It seems regardless if TV1 has cut the connection, if I have not turned on TV2, it can still be found until that inevitably cuts out also. I have attached one log here that I restarted serviio once TV1 had already cut the connection, TV2 has now also cut the connection. I have tried to cut it right down to include the important bits. I have cut out most of the rechecking of files and the many of the repeating file sending lines while it was playing for the 30 minutes (not even sure if that much is meant to be there to be honest). Hopefully I haven't cut out important parts?? It's massive so I can send it another way if needed if theres things missing

5 - Only thing I haven't tried is the dependency fix. I couldn't figure out how.

Re: service disconnects and cannot be found - E series Samsu

The Network Shield in Avast looks suspiciously like a firewall :) You can see what firewalls are running by typing "Security" into your Windows Start area, Select "Check Security Status" and then expand the Security area, and the "View installed firewall programs". Basically we want them all off for now (and when this is all over, only put one back on).

Essentially we are narrowing down on the problem:
  • it's unlikely to be your router (unless you have turned something weird turned on, then you have the same model and firmware as me). I assume you dont have any switches or other hardware in play
  • it's unlikely to be the TV's (would have expected to hear from more users if this was the case)
  • it's unlikely to be Serviio as you are also seeing the issue with the WMP server.
Which leaves us with the PC. Something seems to be blocking the communication between PC and the TV's - it may also pay to disable Avast for now as well.

 Do you have another PC that we can load Serviio on to help confirm that it is PC related.
 Sorry, should have asked at the beginning - are you connected by wireless or wired. If wireless, have you tried via cable?
<edit>from your first post I see its wireless - is this effecting the TV furthest from the router? try a cable if possible, if not try moving the router and TV closer together (not easy I appreciate).</edit>

  • I can try to load it up on the laptop and see how I go.
  • I'm using Ethernet over Power for the connection so this shouldn't be the problem. I started using Serviio 1.0 and never had the problem. Maybe something changed during the versions
  • I've always had Avast free on with the browser defender. (It says it should tell me if it's blocked something and nothing is appearing)
  • I'm also testing streaming a movie using airplayer app on my ipad from serviio to check if this cuts. Not sure if whatever it is (avast or other) should still impact on it TO the ipad
  • the computer usage data is also quite low. So it's not being stressed at all

I'm currently testing a movie with the normal firewall off to check.
Then I'll do a second test with Avast off if I'm not successful.

In addition to the firewall off.... ie both off.
Its a challenging one. I am sure something changed between versions with respect to how Serviio communicates to devices (based on the number of connection issues around). I'll check the new features logs, but maybe zip can comment.
