Samsung UN60F7100 or the Network

Samsung can not connect with Serviio.

I just got a Samsung UN60F7100 and I am looking for a Linux-based media server
(open-source with active development and user-base).
I have googled for:
Samsung 7100 mediatomb
Samsung 7100 serviio
Samsung 7100 plex
Samsung 7100 ps3
Samsung 7100 subsonic
Samsung 7100 tvmobili
had there are no direct hits.
Lots of hits for older Samsung TVs but not 7100.
Also, all images associated with such older help show the Samsung TV
GUI has changed with the 'F' series.

But I did see that Serviio forum had some 'F' series hits.

Samsung support says to download their Windows PC media server and that they
do not support Linux. In fact, as a measure of their non-support,
their media server download page does not even render on Firefox
(they say, "works best on Internet Explorer" ... an understatement).
I have a Linux NAS box and have no desire to get a Windows PC box.

My Samsung TV can connect to the Internet from my home LAN (I can browse
and I even upgrade to their latest firmware level 1121).
Both the Samsung and the Linux box have static ips (as well as all of my other
Linux boxes on my LAN; there is no local DNS or DHCP servers).
The Linux NAS is on the same LAN and can successfully ping the Samsung.
Both Samsung and Linux box connect through a NetGear device which, in
turn, connects to my ISP via router and cable modem.

My hardware configuration is:

Samsung UN60F7100 Linux Box (Fedora 20 default iptables)
| |
NetGear-ProSafe-5-port-switch
|
|
NetGear-FS108 --- other stuff
|
router
|
cable-modem
|
ISP --- Internet

With the media server and TV on, when, via the Samsung TV GUI, I request
that it find all of the DLNA content devices on the LAN, it fails to
find the media server.

This is the interaction:
On the Samsung Videos, Music, Photos page I click on Videos and get the option:
"Connect Nearby Devices (DLNA) via home network"
I click on "Nearby Devices" which yields:
"No devices detected nearby."
"Select your device type and learn how to connect to it."
The options are: "Computer" "Smart Phone" "Close"
I click on "Computer" which yields the message containing:
Instructions to download and install Samsung's Window media server.

In addition, someone suggested that one could simply directly connect the
Linux Box to the Samsung TV by passing the NetGear switch.
Doing this the Samsung TV complained that it could not get a connection.

So, I am resorting to support forums.

Is it an iptable problem?
Has anyone gotten a Samsung UN60F7100 TV to work with Serviio?
Do I have to use an internal router and DHCP?

I have until March 8th 2014 to find a solution, else I must return
the Samsung (getting a refund - but, I really like the Samsung other
than the fact that it can not be used for the purpose I purchased if for).

Thanks
Richard

Re: Samsung UN60F7100 or the Network

have you installed serviio on your device?
Samsung works pefectly with serviio, I have it installed on one Fedora 20 (before on Fedora 18 & 19) Linux.
Like you, I tried many proggies (PLEX, tomb,mobili....) but for my taste, best one is Serviio.
I use it to stream local and online videos to my samsung ES6800, both PC and TV are wired to router Linksys wrt54gl (both have wireless option but I don't use it), never had problems.

Re: Samsung UN60F7100 or the Network

SUCCESS
I was talking to a friend at work about my issues with Serviio and that I might be a firewall issue;
should I try enabling multicast just in case they were disabled. Well, he suggested that I simply try:
iptables -F
(after saving them), and sure enough Serviio could see the Samsung and the Samsung to see
Serviio (none of the videos showed up, but one step at a time).
So, I will have to figure out what exactly I have to "flush" from the default Fedora install firewall
configuration so that my machine is still safe, but at least I know that Serviio can communicate
with my Samsung UN60F7100.

Thanks all .... but I image I will be back with further questions ...
