Samsung and Serviio does not connect thru wifi

I just moved to a new apartment and are trying to get Serviio up again. I have a iMac 27" 3,1 GHz Intel Core i5 with OS X Yosemite 10.10.2. WiFi comes through a Technicolor TG389 Ethernet gateway and behind that there is a Raycore Mediabox. The TV is a Samsung UE46D6535.

With Servo 1.4.1.2 and a Airport Extreme it usually worked fine. This time I downloaded 1.5 an now the TV does not find serviio at all, it only connects to the modem and shows it's empty folders.

Anyone with a clue?

Re: Samsung and Serviio does not connect thru wifi

My guess is there's something wrong with the Wi-Fi settings on the gateway box. However, I'm a little unclear about your network layout. Your Wi-Fi is provided by the Technicolor box, but then you say the Raycore box is "behind" it. Is it behind, the same way your TV is behind it?. Does your TV see the Raycore box (or is it something that the TV can see at all)?

Next we need to look at your IP address settings. Assuming your Technicolor box is assigning all IP addresses for your network, every device should be assigned an address in the same subnet. This means the first three numbers in the IP address should be the same (i.e. 192.168.0.x, with x being different on each device). If not, then your Wi-Fi is being assigned a different subnet, and nothing on the local network will be visible.

It is also possible the Wi-Fi is set up for "guest" access only, which means it will block the Wi-Fi device from seeing anything other than the Internet. It may or may not assign an IP address from the same subnet as the internal addresses. I've done a quick web search for your Technicolor TG389, but can't find anything detailed about its functionality, at least in English! I finally did find one spec sheet that indicates it support four SSIDs, which means it could be assigning your Wi-Fi to a guest service, rather than allowing access to the entire internal network. You'll need to check the settings. I can't find an instruction manual online to help out.

Thanks for your time. I'm no network expert, but as far as I understand the Raycore Mediabox split up the different services - broadband, TV and telephone - which all come thru the same fiber in this apartment. The Technicolor box is connected to the Raycore box and works as wifi router. TV is connected to wifi and so is the computer.

Correct. The box itself is 192.168.0.1, my computer is 192.168.0.69 and TV is 192.168.0.72. Youtube and other apps works fine ot the TV so Internet is fine. When I open AllShare it only shows the empty folders of the technicolor box and nothing from the computer.

OK, I'm not sure I understand this part. Could my Technicolor box prevent a local network and just supply internet? I have a swedish manual, but I'm not sure it covers this. I'll see what I can find out.

Re: Samsung and Serviio does not connect thru wifi

Try removing the TV from Serviio (renderers list on the Status tab) and also if possible, removing Serviio or refreshing the server list on the TV (not sure if the Samsung has this option).

Then let the TV and Server refresh and rediscover everything.

Did anything else change? Eg were you wired and now wireless. Does the IP address of the TV match what is listed on the Serviio server. Otherwise post a detailed log.

Re: Samsung and Serviio does not connect thru wifi

OK, computer and TV are both on Wi-Fi. That eliminates my thought of them being on different subnets or the Wi-Fi being set to guest access only.

Follow what DenyAll suggests and let us know.

I did before posting here. Nothing showed up. A day later the computers IP showed up as Unrecognized device. I have also deleted all units from the All Share settings on the TV. Only the router (Technicolor) shows up there now. I have been refreshing several times.

Router and ISP changed. I also upgraded Serviio to 1.5 when things did not work. Computer and TV are the same an I was wireless before too. I have not yet received my TV decoder, but I can't see how that should be interfering with Serviio. IP numbers are different now. They used to be 10.0.0.x now they are 192.168.0.x. I also recently upgraded to Mac OS x 10.10.2 (Used to be 10.10.1 something i think).

I can't even see the IP address of the TV in Serviio, only the computers IP shows up. In the TV I can only see the router as a unit. They does not discover each other at all.

I have activated the detailed log.

Re: Samsung and Serviio does not connect thru wifi

OK, I see a possible problem. In the earlier post you said the IP address was in the 192.168.0.x subnet. The log shows a bound IP address of 192.168.1.74. These two subnets can't talk with each other.

Still suspicious of the Wi-Fi being in some sort of guest mode, which is prohibiting devices from seeing anything else on the Wi-Fi. Check your Wi-Fi settings closely in your router. Look for anything that talks about different IP address ranges or allowing Wi-Fi clients to see each other.

You should have a screen on the TV showing its assigned IP address. You should be able to ping the TV from the computer. If you can't, there's nothing Serviio can do to solve that. You have a networking issue that has nothing to do with the way Serviio works.

Re: Samsung and Serviio does not connect thru wifi

I read about a DNS error in Samsungs TVs and updated the TV setting with Google DNS 8.8.8.8. I also made a hard reset of the router. Now serviio finds the TV. :D

Read more about the DNS error: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/432 ... g-internet

Re: Samsung and Serviio does not connect thru wifi

Glad you resolved it, but it's a weird one. DNS shouldn't affect Serviio discovery. Maybe fixing the DNS issues also fixes other problems in the Samsung. Or it could have been the hard reset of the router that did the trick.

Anyway, good to see it resolved. Should help others that come across the problem.

Re: Samsung and Serviio does not connect thru wifi

OK, one more thing to add to the tool box. Definitely a weird one!

Like DenyAll said, in theory it shouldn't have had an effect on Serviio, but as a side note I did try using a Belkin router that had DNS issues. It assigned itself as the DNS server for my network (as it should) but nothing on my network could reach the Internet. I had to manually assign a different DNS (such as Google) on every device before things would work. I should have known better as I had issues with another Belkin router, but was sucked in by the low price. Never again...
