Samsung HT-E5500 subtitles

Hello.

I have a 4 years old LCD TV in my living room on which I want to watch movies over the network. Since the TV doesn't have DLNA, 2 days ago I brought a home cinema system (SONY BDV-E380) which has this capability.
Though the Sony system plays mkv files perfectly, the subtitles (srt) don't appear.
I've tried a few media servers, but it didn't work on any of them. I've also tried using mkv merge to add the subtitle directly on the movie but it didn't work. In the end I came across serviio and after doing some research on the forum I found out that the Sony device doesn't stream srt files over DLNA.
On the subtitles support page for serviio I've seen that srt files are supported only for LG and Samsung BD players. I called at the store and explained to them what my issue is and they said that I can take the device back to them and get a refound. Since I'll be getting my money back, I did some research and found at about the same price the Samsung model HT-E5500. I didn't find on the forum any particular info about this player and external subtitles over DLNA, so I would like to ask for your help on this one:

If I buy the Samsung HT-E5500, will I be able to view the subtitles over DLNA? The files I'll be playing will be mkv and avi.

Or, another possibility would be to buy a dedicated media player and keep the Sony device. This would be pricey, but I would like to avoid it unless it's the only solution; or the recommended one.

Re: Samsung HT-E5500 subtitles

I think it should work - although I don't have the device. You could contact Samsung support as they have AllShare server that supports the subs in the same way Serviio does. They should be able to confirm whether it works.
