Serviio on NAS, Not working subtitles on PS3

Good morning,
I have installed Serviio server on my Synology DS413j and Serviio console on Windows 8. Serviio is working, i can watch movies on my PS3, but the problem is with subtitles. I have them in .srt file, it is saved in the folder with the movie and it is named the same as the .avi file, but it only has the .srt extension instead of .avi. When I enable transcoding, I can see subtitles, but the processor in my NAS is too slow for transcoding and the movie buffers so slowly that it is not possible to watch it. External subtitles option in the console is turned on, but it doesn't work, when i click on the "Subtitles options" on the PS3, I can only see "Subtitles options aren't available". I have searched in the Internet and in the forum, but I haven't found anything that helped me. What can I do?

I'm sorry for my bad English. I can't send log, because I don't know where it is saved on NAS. Im using Serviio 1.2.1. Thanks for any help.

Re: Serviio on NAS, Not working subtitles on PS3

My understanding is that the PS3 does not support external sub files. As such, you would normally use Serviio to burn the subtitles in to provide this functionality. This requires transcoding, which as you have found can be processor intensive - certainly too much for the CPU's in most NAS's.

All is not lost though. If you need subtitles, you can use a program called AVIAddXSubs to mux them into your AVI file in a manner supported by the PS3. I've not tried this but it have a read of http://www.guidingtech.com/18623/add-su ... srt-files/. It's only supported for AVI's (not mp4, mkv's etc).

Re: Serviio on NAS, Not working subtitles on PS3

DenyALL, thank you for reply. I thought that PS3 works with external subtitles, because before I bought Synology I used to use PS3 Media Server and it worked (I didn't know that it does transcoding). I will check, if external subtitles from Serviio work with EMTEC MovieCube, because I heard that muxing subtitles with a movie takes very much time.

edit: DenyAll, thank you very much for your advice. I tested AviAddXSub and it worked, it is much better than other software I have tested before. Do you know any program which can do the same with .mp4 and .mkv files?

Re: Serviio on NAS, Not working subtitles on PS3

Sorry GramWGre - I didn't pick up on the edit to your post. The free software Handbrake can be used to mux external subtitle files into an MP4 or MKV, but I don't believe the PS3 supports subtitles in these container types (the PS3 doesn't support MKV's natively anyway, so these files need to be either transcoded or, in most cases, simply re-muxed into a different container type. The Serviio PS3 profile does this for you already).

ps. yes, PS3 Media Server does transcode. I used it before coming across Serviio, have never looked back. Remuxing files should be very quick (its video transcoding that takes time and CPU horsepower).
