Best format for older BDP's
I have some slightly older Bravia equipment - TV is a KDL40S5100 US model (which makes it, I think, a 2009 or 2010 one), and a BDP-S370 blu-ray. I access Serviio via the S370, running Serviio 1.0.1 with the "Sony BD Player/SMP" standard profile.
Things seem to work fine, but I do come across the occasional AVI file that lists in the library, but doesn't want to play for whatever reason, but works just fine if I try to play it in VLC on the same computer. That's fine, it's a PITA, but it's fine.
The big issue for me is WMV's. I can't get them to play smoothly. It stutter-stops like mad, making any WMV totally unwatchable.
Add to this Sony's complete disdain for subtitles through DLNA, and I'm sick of it.
What format/codec setup would it be best to convert my entire library to? I want Serviio to just stream the stuff to the player with minimal overhead - no transcoding. I'd like to hard burn subtitles into the video if available as well. Is there a good, fast re-encoder that's free or nearly so available that would help with this?
I'm sure I'm not the only one out there that would prefer to do this, but I can't find it via search - not for older equipment, anyway.
Thanks.
