Serviio Media Center wont play sound through Surround system

I am sorry if this may be a repeat topic. I feel like the solution is something simple that I am just missing... and i have spent the whole day trying to google a solution and searched these forums. So I decided to just make a topic.

I have a Sony Bravia TV. And today downloaded Serviio. I normally just stream from Windows Media Player to my Xbox, but I have this smart TV that is just going to waste, so I wanted to stream directly from IT rather than the Xbox. After spending time trying to figure out how to do THAT, I finally got it working. But the Media center is considered as a separate Input. My TV is connected via HDMI 1 to my surround sound system. I have about 6 different devices connected via HDMI ports directly on the surround sound system itself. Since the Media Center is considered a separate input I cant get sound to play on the system. I have tried every source on the surround sound system, but to no avail. Do I need to connect something else?

Again, I feel like it MUST be something simple that I am overlooking, but I cannot find any answers online.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Re: Serviio Media Center wont play sound through Surround sy

On serviio console, do you enable "downmix to Stereo" or "keep original" ?
What is your Sony Device model ?
What is your sound system model?

On Sony device, you can choose to output audio to the TV Speaker or External Sound system do you try both ?

Re: Serviio Media Center wont play sound through Surround sy

Thank you for the reply.

On Serviio console I have "keep original" enabled. Fro reading these forums that seemed to be the option people were saying to have if you wanted surround sound.

Sony Device Model: Sony Bravia KDL 65W850A
Sound System device: Marantz AV Surround Reciever NR1402

I have tried both outputs.

Options > Sound > Speakers > TV Speaker/Audio System

If I choose TV Speaker the sound comes through the TV speakers
If I choose Audio System the sound does not come through at all. Seeming no matter what channel I put the Receiver on.

My connected Devices:

HDMI 1 (the only input that will work with my surround system, because it is the only input with a HDMI cable that goes to the receiver)
HDMI 2 (Nothing connected)
HDMI 3 (Nothing connected)
HDMI 4 (Nothing connected)
Video 1 (Nothing connected)
Video 2/Component (Nothing connected)
Serviio Media Center (Video but no sound IF I choose Audio device instead of TV speakers)
Screen Mirroring (Nothing connected)

If I use the XBOX to stream the very same files, surround sound will work, because the Xbox is connected directly to the receiver with is connected directly to HDMI 1.

According to this http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/13MH850111/ ... _hdmi.html
When connecting a “BRAVIA” Sync-compatible digital audio system and Audio Return Channel (ARC) technology, connect to HDMI IN 1 with an HDMI cable. However, if connecting a system that is not “BRAVIA” Sync-compatible or Audio Return Channel, an additional audio connection via DIGITAL AUDIO OUT (OPTICAL) is necessary.

I use optical connection between my Sony TV and my DENON system.

Sorry to bug ya. I'm very very new to all this, but I am unfamiliar to what those terms exactly mean. I think I may get the gist. But:

What is "Bravia sync compatible device"? Is that the Receiver of the Surround sound system?

In short I just have to use the Digital Optical Audio out fro the TV?

Re: Serviio Media Center wont play sound through Surround sy

If you read this for exemple :
http://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisi ... 984#M18923

Sony Bravia Sync system is word for the more generic "HDMI CEC", that could be used to control other devices thg HDMI cable...

So only HDMI 1 on your TV device use HDMI CEC and Audio Return Channel (ARC) technology. If your audio device support HDMI CEC & ARC, that could be possible.
Otherwise you have to use Optical Output from your TV to your audio system.

Re: Serviio Media Center wont play sound through Surround sy

It seems that your device support HDMI CEC and ARC according to the datasheet (Page 8): http://www.marantz.fr/DocumentMaster/FR ... OM_v00.pdf

You can also read this : http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/13MH850111/ ... 5_236.html

But I don't remember if Audio through HDMI support multichannel (5.1) format.

I know Optical Output does support it.

My new Samsung TV supports HDMI ARC, and it will send Dolby Digital back through to my Yamaha receiver. I think it will send standard DTS as well, but can't confirm that without further testing. ARC does not support HD audio bitstream, unfortunately. I was hoping it would, but I can confirm that it won't.

Re: Serviio Media Center wont play sound through Surround sy

Basically the TV Audio will not OVERRIDE the channels in the receiver.

TV
.
.
HDMI 1
.
.
Receiver
._______.____._____.____.____.____.______._______.____
SAT---GAME---CD---DVD---BD---TV---AUX---TUNER---M-XPort

SAT = Cable HDMI cable
Game = Xbox One HDMI cable
DVD = PS3 HDMI cable
BD = PS4 HDMI cable
DVD = Xbox 360 HDMI cable

So... if I Stream and connect to the Media Server on the TV, the Sound from the receiver will still only play the sound from these Above listed connections. If I connect to a movie on the server, and the Receiver is STILL tuned to SAT... it will play the sound coming from the cable box. If the receiver is set to Game, it will play the sound coming from my Xbox One. All these channels from the receiver will play sound even if my TV is turned off naturally. The receiver does not care what the setting on your TV is. I could set the TV to HDMI 3, and the Receiver would STILL only play the connections connected directly to it.

I will def have to try the optical audio cable then, cause nothing else is working :(

But this is also why the terms Sync Device etc etc are confusing to me, because since I'm new to these things, I'm not sure in what way do they apply to my problem O_O
