FAQ
- Subtitle not supported in MPEG program streams (VOB files in other words). --> With Serviio 1.2 version, enable subtitles on serviio console
- SRT subtitle files not supported (must be "burned" into video stream, need to transcode/remux it using virtualdub/avidemux) ---> With Serviio 1.2 version, enable subtitles on serviio console
- When video bitrate is expensive (>20Mbps), the TV (could) becomes unresponsive - doesn't react on remote commands any more. Check with Bitrate Viewer
- MKV files are not supported in native format by Sony Bravia 2010-2012, so Serviio will transcode in MPEG2TS, nevertheless all subtitles will be lost with transcoding.---> With Serviio 1.2 version, enable embedded subtitles extraction on serviio console
- AVC H264 High Profile maximum Level is 4.1
- Photo JPEG YCbCr 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 formats, and conforming to DCF 2.0 or Exif 2.21 are supported, Photo JPEG YCbCr 4:4:4 are not supported. --> With Serviio 1.2 version, will be transcoded
Need to have jpegs with a medium quality level. The TV set won't accept "Highest" and "High" quality levels of a NX2 or Photoshop converted jpeg file.
- AVI video Restrictions(>2011 serie): DivX Home Theater 3.0 only in SD resolution, Xvid are supported with QPEL = No and GMC : 0 / No warppoints, some fourCC are not supported, changed fourCC with : XVID
Q: With 2013 model, mkv does not play.
A: Try to rebuild your mkv with MkvToolnix/Mkvmerge tools and read that topic:
FAQ: Playback Does Not Work VLC Cannot Seek Mkv merge
FAQ: Improving Playback Compatibility With Players
Q: I have just downloaded the new serviio version 1.2 but embeded subtitles does not work. Why ?
A: WARNING: Embedded subtitles might not work for some (large) files, due to the time needed to extract them. It's even more true if the file is stored on a remote drive.
Q: I have just downloaded the new serviio version 1.2. I can now see subtitles on my Sony Bravia but there must be a problem with Greek language. I cannot read anything. The characters are unreadable.
A: If the file is encoded in Ansi ( open it in Notepad++). Change the encoding in UTF-8 and it will work.
Q: Is it possible in any way to manually specify either the font or the vertical position of the subtitles?
The size is pretty much bang on but it would be nice if I could have them rendered an inch or so up instead of being right at the very bottom of the picture.
A: With Serviio 1.2 version, the only solution to change parameters of subtitles (position, font size, color, aspect,etc) is to use external ass subtitle file and edit some parameters:
see this example: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2396&p=88533#p88533
You don't have access to font parameters for other external subtitle files format or embedded ones.
Q: I can see the file on my TV and has a thumbnail picture, but when I try to play the file I get an error "The server is Temporarily unavailable". Serviio log : ERROR [ResourceTransportRequestHandler] Error while processing resource, sending back 500 error. Message: FFmpeg execution failed java.io.IOException: FFmpeg execution failed
A: Turn on detailed logging you should be able to see the FFmpeg command that is used for the transcode. Try executing the command manually in a terminal window and post the (error) result here.
Q: What file types/bitrates have worked the best for those with sony DLNA products?
A: It is very difficult to answer.
- Best container, probably MKV but not supported with all DLNA products, best Sony container seems to be MPEG2-TS limited to 20-25Mbps bitrate.
- Best Audio encoder is DTS but AC3 must be preferred ( 2channels with 192kbps, 6 channels with 384kbps)
- Best video encoder is x264 (AVC H264 High Profile, max Level 4.1, maximum 1920 x 1080 resolution ), you could probably set the maximum video bitrate to 15-17Mbps.
Q: With the new version of Handbrake (0.9.5), encoded video does not work.
A: The new version of Handbrake (0.9.5) uses a variable framerate with some encodes. Sony does not appear to be able to handle these.
The latest builds include a handy checkbox that allows the user to force a constant framerate – if this is checked, Handbrake will work fine with Sony.
Here's a Handbrake developer's reply on the Handbrake forum:
“The problem is with your player. In 0.9.5, HandBrake started producing correct variable framerate h.264. Prior to 0.9.5, HandBrake produced variable framerate timestamps, but did not set the correct flags in the encoded video. The tbc value you are looking at is the codec time base. With variable framerate h.264, the codec time base is *not* the same thing as the framerate. 180k is the right value. So to make your player happy, you are going to have to select constant framerate. In recent nightly builds, there is a checkbox for this. In 0.9.5, picking a specific framerate instead of “Same as source” will force constant framerate.”
Q: Serviio icon not appearing
A: One cause I found recently for Serviio icon not appearing that had me stomped for a while with Sony Bravia was max number of servers on the TV. Had this problem when I added a new serving PC to the network. I was thinking firewall or something at the Serviio end initially.
Servers seem to be automatically detected and displayed to a max of 10 on Bravia. Servers may come and go on the LAN but it remembers the first 10. You can delete old servers that no longer exist or set servers manually to not display to allow the display of a new Serviio server.
Configuration on TV is in Network | Home Network Setup | Server Display Settings
Q: I have a problem with transcoding *.avi files. The files with audio bitrate more then 224 kbit/sec (audio codecs: AC 3 ACM Codec and Lame MP3) do not transcoded with Serviio. And play not by TV Sony. When bitrate less or = 224 kbit/sec, I have no problem.
A: Edit Sony profile with aBitrate constraint :
Q: It seems to have issues with a lot of 1080p MKVs / MP4s on Sony KDL-32W5500 ( 2009 model). The symptoms are skipping. Sometimes a file will play fine for 10 / 20 seconds then start skipping. I guess it could be the bitrate of the video thats causing the issue, I'm not sure exactly what the TV supports.
A: Edit Sony 2009 profile with, maxvbitrate to 12000, maxheight to 720 to get mkvs to play without stuttering. Quad core PC is at about 85% cpu while transcoding
Q: It seems to have issues with some PVR files on my Sony Bravia 2012 model ( for example : mpegts / Video: h264 / Audio: aac )
A: if PVR format is always the same, you can create a custom profile that transcode this file to mpegts/mpeg2video/aac.
Copy/paste in profiles.xml just before the last </Profiles> element:
Then save and restart serviio services and on serviio console select this profile when you want to play a PVR file.
Q: On the whole my EX503 does quite well with 1080p MKV files but there's one in particular that it can't handle. In high-FX scenes with a large proportion of high detail CGI the video and audio stutters. The 5.1 light on my amp flashes on/off as it's stuttering so it seems like something is struggling to keep up.
A: Its a very high video bitrate, so one solution is to force video transcoding.
Suggest to create a Custom sony profile that only transcode mkv/h264 media.
or
Q: Black Screen with some online sources - KDL-46z5500 - Sony 2009 model
A: Sony Bravia TVs from 2009 can play HD H.264 perfectly well but only if the resolution of the video is one of the AVCHD standard ones. (1920x1080, 1440x1080, 1280x720).

- Code:
<Profile id="sonypvr" name="Sony Bravia TV (2012) - for PVR files" extendsProfileId="sony2012">
<Transcoding>
<!-- Transcode PVR files -->
<Video targetContainer="mpegts" targetVCodec="mpeg2video" forceVTranscoding="true" maxVBitrate="17000" targetACodec="ac3" aBitrate="192" DAR="16:9">
<Matches container="mpegts" vCodec="h264" aCodec="aac" />
</Video>
</Transcoding>
</Profile>
- Code:
<Profile id="sonymkv" name="Sony Bravia TV (2010) - MKV*" extendsProfileId="sony2010">
<Transcoding>
<!-- Transcode MKV/h264 -->
<!-- remove DAR option on next line for U.S. model -->
<Video targetContainer="mpegts" targetVCodec="mpeg2video" maxVBitrate="17000" targetACodec="ac3" aBitrate="384" DAR="16:9" forceInheritance="true">
<Matches container="matroska" vCodec="h264" />
</Video>
</Transcoding>
</Profile>
or
- Code:
<Profile id="sonyavc" name="Sony Bravia TV (2010) - AVC" extendsProfileId="sony2010">
<Transcoding>
<Video targetContainer="mpegts" targetVCodec="h264" maxVBitrate="12000" forceVTranscoding="true" targetACodec="ac3" aBitrate="384" DAR="16:9" forceInheritance="true">
<Matches container="*" vCodec="h264" />
</Video>
</Transcoding>
</Profile>
