Sony Bravia 2011 and MKV 264 files from BBC

If I save BBC HD TS files to MKV H264 they play ok on my Samsung Blu-ray player but the files do not play at all on the Sony TV using Serviio, but surprisingly do using WMP .

I can stream to both devices using MP4 (264) but the sound is out of sync on both devices ,but in sync when played on the PC using VLC.

I do not really care which format I am saving to, just trying to find a common one that will play on both the Sony and the Samsung when recorded from UK Freesat (AC3) and Freeview ( AAC ) HD channels.

Please note that the MKV (264) refuse to play on the Sony when using both VRD and Handbrake.

SD recordings are not an issue as both devices are happy with Serviio and the TS format.

Thanks

Sony 2011 don't support mkv so the lack of playback isn't surprising but if your serving the files via Serviio it should play them. Have you got transcoding enabled ?

Have you tried just feeding the TS files to the Sony ? and via Serviio ?

Have you tried mp4 format ?

Thanks

(1) Yes I have transcoding switched on
(2) Sony plays TS (264) but Samsung does not
(3) MP$ plays on both but the sound is out of sync.

1) get the mediainfo of your file that won't transcode and ffmpeg log
3)how did you create the mp4 from the ts ? have you tried other audio profiles and codecs to see if they are in sync ?

Thanks
Information as requested below
I normally use Videoredo to produce MP4's but also tried Handbrake and got the same out of sync result.
The MKV test file was produced using Handbrake but again same result using Videoredo.

Re: Sony Bravia 2011 and MKV 264 files from BBC

Y0u are correct it is something to do with the frame rate as when I change the setting in VRD from no change to automatic the picture plays erratically without any sound.

I have also found that my Samsung Blu-ray player "misjudges" the lengh of the file and sometimes stop playing after a few minutes.

What is really surprising is the Windows media player streams the files to both the files without any problems.

Thanks

Re: Sony Bravia 2011 and MKV 264 files from BBC

You can find that on Sony FAQ:
Q: With the new version of Handbrake (0.9.5), encoded video does not work.
A: The new version of Handbrake (0.9.5) uses a variable framerate with some encodes. Sony does not appear to be able to handle these.
The latest builds include a handy checkbox that allows the user to force a constant framerate – if this is checked, Handbrake will work fine with Sony.
Here's a Handbrake developer's reply on the Handbrake forum:
“The problem is with your player. In 0.9.5, HandBrake started producing correct variable framerate h.264. Prior to 0.9.5, HandBrake produced variable framerate timestamps, but did not set the correct flags in the encoded video. The tbc value you are looking at is the codec time base. With variable framerate h.264, the codec time base is *not* the same thing as the framerate. 180k is the right value. So to make your player happy, you are going to have to select constant framerate. In recent nightly builds, there is a checkbox for this. In 0.9.5, picking a specific framerate instead of “Same as source” will force constant framerate.”

Does fix frame rate solved your problem? could we close the topic?

Re: Sony Bravia 2011 and MKV 264 files from BBC

Ok I accept your findings but why is the Sony happy to stream the same files produced from Videoredo or Handbrake from Widows media player.

The Handbrake findings are a bit of a red herring as I only used it to confirm that it was not only VRD that had a problem.

Thanks
